Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell Inspiron 530s. The cd-rom drive no longer works. It won't read any cd or dvd, and when I try to write something on the drive, it treats it like a virtual drive and puts everything in memory and not on the cd or dvd. It's supposed to be a cd-rom drive, but it now is displayed as a dvd-ram drive when I run my computer display. The driver is up to date.

If the Dvd/Cd rom is working except read/write, then the culprit is the "Lens", but when you say "it now is displayed as a dvd-ram drive" there must be an internal faulty like chip/ic's on the Printed circuit board (pcb) of the dvd drive. But before you get it repaired, you can try one more trick; open the cabinet and check the cable of the Cd-rom drive, if possible connect another working cable and reconnect it on the board, also check the power cable. Boot your system and check if it makes any difference. You can also check it on another system (computer). If this doesn't help, I would suggest you to get it repaired, but I recommend replacement since the cost to repair and buying new drive isn't that much different. In case, it's under warranty, you can go and claim it.
Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa.

The quickest way to see if it is still OK is to go back in time.
Select restor point from the search box and see if a suitable date is available. If there is and the driver has thrown a wobbly that will sort it out.
Hope that helps.

HI,
If the drive was working fine earlier , and has suddenly quit working , Remove all media from the drive. Download and run the following patch from micorsoft . If it doesnot fix the issue the dirve would have to replaced.

I cleaned out my start up folder and now my cd-dvd drive will not recogonize or open any discs. dell inspiron 530s running vista.

you will want to check the device manager to see if the drivers are not working properly.

Go to start then right click on my computer and go to properties
On the left side of the properties window you will see device manager click on that and find the dvd/cd-rom drives
click on the plus icon to the left of that and it will show you the drives right click and select update driver and then select search automatically for updated drivers.

Cd rom problem

Try to play different cds from your dvd rom drive.
If all of them does play then i suspected the cd that you had inserted to play is faulty.

If all of the cds doesn't work, re-install your dvd rom driver. If it doesn't still read any cds then your dvd rom drive is faulty.

Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

Problem with Inspiron 530S Desktop Reading CD's

If your computers are relatively old then they may not be able to burn CD's or read CD's that were burned. A new CD/DVD burner is relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
