My Sony PS3 will beep three times and shut down on its own shortly after it is turned on, any idea what it is?

It sounds like the "yellow light of death". After beeping three times does it flash to a yellow light at all? If so your hard drive is no longer good and will either a. need to be replaced by a professional, or b. buy a new ps3.

It is what we all fear on the ps3.

If there is no yellow light, the ps3 is probably just doing a hard shutdown because something is freezing. a few things you can try are. 1. put in a different game, loading that game may be whats causing it to freeze. 2. do the fan test to make sure its not overheating

How to fix your PS3 when it's frozen at start up

things you'll need:

* PS3
* TV
* Game Controller
* USB cord

Instructions

The first thing your going to want to know is your model number. It can be found on the back panel of the PS3 on the serial number label, and it will begin with CECH. Example - Serial: XXXXXXXXXXXX-CECHXXX -

Put your PS3 in Standby Mode.

For models: CECHA01, BO1, E01, E01MG, G01, H01, H01MG, K01, LO1, AND P01, it will have a power switch on the back. Flip it off then back on and you will have a solid red indicator light on the front.

For models: CECH-2001A and 2001B, press the power button on the front until the indicator light turns red. If all else fails unplug the power cord and plug it back in.

Time to enter Safe Mode.

Press and hold your finger over the power button on the front until you hear three beeps and the indicator light goes back to red. Then release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds the third and final beep will sound then the indicator light will return to red.)

Press and hold your finger over the power button again until you hear a quick double beep. The release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds you will hear the double beep.)

Connect controller to PS3 screen.

Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the front of your PS3 and the top of your game controller, (between the left and right bumpers). Then Press the PS button in the center of the controller.

Safe Mode options screen.

Select option number 3, (Restore File System). Then select yes to perform step.

"The hard disk's file system is corrupt and will be restored."

First press the PS button to turn the controller back on. Then press the x button and it will restore, it will then restart and your problem is fixed!

Top multimedia features are on the console of PS3 and it is also connected with PlayStation Portable. While having all the high features, PS3 is not protected from occasional freezes and one knows that. It is the most irritating time when one is enjoying the best of the gaming time when everything suddenly comes to a halt. It is rare that PS3 will freeze but they do occur sometimes and are caused by scratched console disk or overheating.

1. Overheating: When the console is kept in a stuffed room where there is not ample breathing space, then it will get overheated and too much heat on the PS3 will cause a meltdown. It can easily be remedied when the console is placed all by itself and no other electronic machine is nearby.

2. Scratches: Scratches on the disk that can cause looping inside and this usually happens at millisecond speed. The console is not actually frozen in this case. Its the time lag that gets continuously repeated at certain times. The freezing of PS3 is generally not too serious. In case of worst freezing, the console has to be taken to the Sony store from where it was brought. The fact is that the owner can only do some basic trouble-shooting for fixing the problem.

If a PS3 freezes, it has to be kept away from other electronic machines at home. Its power button has to be pushed until a beep is heard. The loose cables have to be checked and they can be pulled and plugged back in. The hard drive has to be aired out for a while and placed back in the console after a considerable time.

If this does not help then the repair guide can be consulted to try fixing the PlayStation 3. It is completely detailed and illustrated.

Briefly, this is how it is done:
- The console has to be taken apart carefully
- The CPU and GPU of the console have to be checked. A white can be seen that may be cracked and unevenly spread, it will need a cleaning.
- The console's GPU and CPU has to be cleaned using a dry paper, if a sand paper is to be used then an extremely rough one should not be used.
- The flat surface has to be cleaned and if still there is a need, Arctic Silver 5 Compound can be purchased and used. It has to be applied evenly and thinly on both surfaces.
- The surface which distributed thinly makes sure that every single gap is covered.
- The heat sink cap can be finally put back on.

You can also try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as
well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

I wish you good luck

My ps3 turned off beep 3 times and blinked red there was a disk jam i fixed that but now it wont turn on it goes green blinks blue the goes to red and beep 3 times. is it broken?

9/10 times PS3 beeping is a heat sync problem. It means your CPU and GPU are overheated for long hours of work, poor ventilation of the console, or other reasons. The excess level of heat causes loosening the CPU and GPU. Therefore your CPU and GPU need to be re-seated.

However, before you do anything to fix PS3 three beeps, you should first try the following basic steps. Because there are chances you can easily fix this problem by them. Please Do Try.

1. Turn off the PS3 for more than 30 min , and then boot it up.

2. Unplug all cables, and plug them back in. Make sure they are connected correctly and firmly at both ends.

3. If that didn't work, then try to take out the hard-drive, and put it back in. Chances are this will not fix the problem but about 1% of the time it will due to the HD being connected securely.

For the most part, your PS3 still beeps 3 times after these efforts. That means you have to re-seat the CPU and GPU to fix the problem. In this case, I do recommend that you send your console to Sony repair service center, if your PS3 is still under warranty.

But for those whose console is out of warranty, I suggest they fix PS3 beeps by themselves, under the guide of professional repair manual, of course. Because if the warranty expires, one should pay $150 plus tax to Sony for repair the console, and wait 4-6 weeks for the return of PS3.

Hi.when i turn on my ps3 it freezes at the main screen.please say i dont have to buy a new 1,i dont have the money. :(

Ok, if it is simply the image that is freezing and it is still staying on then there is hope for the PS3.
If however it is turning off with 3 beeps and flashing the red light then that is serious.

Please try the following if it is just the display freezing :

Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)

Press and hold the power button. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep one more time and turn off into standby mode (red light on)

Release the power button

Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and this time there will be 2 quick beeps together. Release the power button when you hear these 2 quick beeps.

The PS3 will start up asking you to connect the controller via USB and press the PS button. Do this and then continue.

After doing the above a menu will load with 6 options. Choose option 3 "Restore File System". This will re-install the PS3 software if it has become corrupt. Ignore any messages about corrupt hard drive, this is normal. If this step does not work try the above again but select option 4, then 5 if that doesn't work.

One of these options should get your PS3 up and running again.

Ps3 freezes and screen goes fuzzy

Try to restore file system on your ps3.
Follow this guide.

HOW TO GO TO THE RECOVERY MENU OF PS3 SYSTEM

1. Make sure the ps3 is plugged in (stand by mode).
2. Put out your usb cable for the controller and the controller itself (do not connect yet).
3. Hold down power firmly, ps3 will turn on and then turn off, release power button when t turns off.
4. Hold down power again, you will hear a beep and then a double beep, when you hear that double beep release the power button.
5. Now you should be seeing something in your monitor that say "Connect usb controller", do just that.
6. After connecting the controller press PS button.
7. You are now in the recovery menu.
8. To fix the problem of corrupt data you can choose #3.
9. If you want to format your hard drive choose #5. Be aware that this option will delete everything that is in your hard drive.
10. Remember that doing #3 and #5 is not 100% to fix the problem of corrupt data, I say about 70%.

Starting up Problems

I found it 2 min. ago. Ok here: while your ps3 is on hold the power button on the ps3 for you will hear one beep, keep holding it then when you hear the second beep take your finger off. Your ps3 should turn off. Now push the power button while holding your finger on it again, you will hear two single beeps, then a double beep, let your finger ago and a screen should appear with six options. Chose something like reset(or restore) file data or something like that and click yes, this wont do anything to your game/music/movie/etc. files but now your ps3 shall work.

Ps3 freezes after start up

Hey guys, same thing happened to me. In case you're looking at this site like I recently had been, I just wanted to post a little update. I bought my PS3 on the Christmas of 2007, and it stopped working after I played an online round of Tekken: Dark Resurrection on July 5. It froze on the wavy part of the introduction of the PS3 system. So what you do is:

1. Press the PS3 "touch" power button and hold it until you hear two buttons "beep"
2. Connect your USB cord to your ps3 controller and press the center button when instructed on the screen.
3. Choose the third choice on the screen which says something about restoring the data (sorry i cant remember i know its the third choice though)
4. When it asks you its question say "Yes." and it will begin the restoring process with the download bar.
5. When its complete it may make you do step 4 once more, so just do it again, or any more times it asks, until it finally restarts properly. ( I had to do it two times)

I hope this helps you guys, it helped me the first day it stopped working!
