Question about Sony CMT-NE3 CD Shelf System

Access MD function without remote

I have a Sony CMT-NE3 stereo and I need to access the MD input so I can plugin my computer's headphone jack (and use it for my iPod). I don't have a remote to access the MD input though, which is what is required (according to the manual) to access this function. I also tried programming a universal remote, but it didn't offer this button either. Is there a way I activate the MD input without the remote? I'm not opposed to opening it up and fiddling with the circuitry if that is the solution.

I don't think there is a solution, but I have the same problem. Trying to use my ipod through md input, but no remote. I've pretty much tried every combination of buttons, but nothing works. What a serious flaw to an otherwise good stereo. O well.

I've got the same system. When I noticed that the MD/aux could only be accessed via remote I SWORE to never loose it. While I've never permanently lost it I have misplaced it a few times. no - it is impossible without the remote. Really alloying - I now use it only to play Steaming internet and iTunes, and I sometimes inadvertnatly bump the wong button and then have to seak out the emote to get my music back. I agree - serously lame design flaw. How much did they save by omitting that button? Maybe you could find a replacement remote through Sony or on eBay.

Sony CMT NE3. A solution to access MD/AUX function without remote.
If you accept to lose the function Tuner (or possibly CD but not tape) you could be interested with this method. Personally, I never use that function on this system. The idea is to feed the Aux input into the tuner input of the IC 302 ( a bd 3881). So, you select the tuner and you hear the Aux input. It works quite good (the display shows "FM" but it's not too much annoying...). You can reach of course the bass-treble etc. settings but be aware that it's not so easy: you will have to work with very small resistors SMD (about 1*2 mm) but, fortunately, only to take them away. It's easier.
You need a solder iron for unleaded soldering, a big lens, some classical tools and not to be blind.
You can get the service manual on
But it's not really necessary : the scheme pictures enclosed come from this site. Please, look at them.
Ready? First, take off the rear cabinet (many screws...).
You will have to take off 4 resistors - R116, R117, R216, R217- and set two wires on the main board, located on the left side, under a metallic cover you need to take off (2 big solderings). The PCB is of high quality and the resistors are well indicated. I hope my pictures will help.
Take heart! You will make it easily better than me; my wires are a bit damaged!
Questions : why is it impossible to do the same with tape ? Because the tape input on the IC 302 is not equivalent with the tuner, cd, and aux inputs (there is an extra preamplifier).
Don't pay attention at the IC302 two wires you can see cut on the picture. I thought first it was necessary to isolate the Aux input from the IC. It's not necessary.

Enjoy your new Aux input without remote (and try to forget the tuner...)!

I am very glad for you but my post shows (in France, may be not elsewhere) only one picture out of the for I sent ! The missing pictures are very important for the wiring; I am very sorry.

How do i connect an ipod to my sony str-de310 receiver

Connecting to a home stereo
  1. For most home stereo systems, connect iPod to your amplifier's sound input using a 3.5 mm mini stereo to RCA adapter cable.
  2. Adjust the volume on iPod to less than half to prevent overdriving your amplifier. Adjust the listening volume using your stereo's controls.

Note: Depending on your stereo, iPod may need to be set higher than half in order to get a proper volume through external speakers.

Please help - I purchased my Mother an iPod (4g NANO) for Christmas and need to know how she can hook up the iPod to her stereo system to use it as I do at home. With mine all I needed was a AUX Cable...

All you need is a 1/8th stereo adapter that runs two rca jacks out red/white! You can get this at any radio shack store...Plug jack 1/8th into mp3 player and the red/white jacke can plug into her aux input Or any other input!

IPod connection

Yes there is. You need to purchase a 1/8 inch jack (standard headphone input) to RCA (red and white) cord, they usually run approx. $20 - $25). Once you have that what you'll need to do is plug the RCA cord into the back of the stereo (corresponding colors, red into the red, white into the white) and set the function to Game (MD). You can do this by pressing the button on your remote or by pressing the function button on the main consul until you see MD on the monitor, press play on your ipod and you're good to go!

MD/CD Changer Control Options

press source button repeatedly to select "CD" or "MD" be aware that in order to connecting Ipod to a car stereo you will need to use an extension cable with 3.5 mm stereo connectors on each end to connect iPod to your car stereo system's aux input, or use a cassette adapter if your car stereo doesn't have a sound input jack. Either of these items can be purchased at stores that sell car stereo accessories. good luck!
