Question about Ryobi 15" Electric Factory Reconditioned Trimmer (ZRRY41002) - Factory Reconditioned

1 Answer

Starting Pull Cord

I have a multi-tool Ryobi string trimmer/edger. The start cord has pulled out and will not retract. This has been happening for some time and with a bit of jiggling, the cord would retract. Now it is fully pulled out and will not go back at all. I took the machine to a small engine repair shop, but they told me it was not economically recoverable. They said on the bottom of the engine was a statement that said it was good for about 50 hours. The machine is much older than 50 hours and the engine works fine. Problem is I can't get the cord back in. What to do?

You didn't list the model but those little rewinds are typically built very similarly.
It may sound a little crazy but it works, take the unit to a power washer such as a car wash and blow out the gook in the rewind with lots of hot soapy water and then rinse. Then using a probe or small screwdriver get the rewind unstuck. If it retracts you’re good to go if not let me know as you may have a broken piece in there and I'll need the model to know what to do next.

Testimonial: "I did not take it to the car wash, but will do what you say next time I have my power washer out. I used a screwdriver and got it into the little groves on the wheel which retracts the pulley. Little by little it went back in and you could hear a spring or something retracting. As soon as I got it all back in, I pulled it and it started. Thanks for the help."

Pull cord on my ryobi s430 string trimmer doesn't engage to turn motor over.

Michael under the pull cord is a gadget that when you pull the cord two wings open and grip the starter. If you can get the starter off make sure these are coming out properly. It may just need a little oil on them.

you have to remove the starter housing, inside will be 2 knobs that spring out when the cord is pulled that contact the flywheel cap of the motor and rotates the crank. check if they are missing or damaged and that they ejecting when the cord is pulled. if not; replace.
