Hi b_a_johnson1, Is this on all photos in the same location and using different lens? If so there are two possible explanations, one is the sensor needs cleaning, the other is the sensor is going out on you. First try cleaning your sensor, not difficult though you need the proper devices. Do not use alcohol and a Q-tip! If it is the sensor going out it must be replaced. First do a reset on the camera, page 36 of the manual. Open the left side rubber terminal cover, just below the USB port is a small button. If that does not work call Nikon at 800-645-6689,

I just got a nikon d40 and i can't figure out how to set it up or get it where i can actually take a picture with it

there is a way to "reset" the camera to the factory defaults. this will get it working . turn on the camera, there are two "green dots" near buttons on the camera. one is near the on-off switch, the other is on the lower left back of the camera. after the camera is turned on, press and hold both of the green dot buttons together for a few seconds. release the buttons, most of the cameras controls will now be reset. turn the know on the top right of the camera to the little green icon, this is full auto setting. Most nikons will not take a picture if there is not a memory card in the camera! the see if it is not working because there is no card, turn on the camera and press the upper left button on the rear of the camera. it will tell you if it has a card or not. if it has a card installed you should be able to take a picture.

A green line is being display on the LCD display.

That is a faulty LCD panel, if it's under Warranty, then take it in for service, if not, I wouldn't bother as it is costly (but up to you)
Cheers.

Black vertical line 2" wide with a very thin green line

Hi,
The black vertical line is caused by a leaking capacitor, Check and replace poped capacitor with a new won and it will work fine again. No worries.
Thanks for using fixya.

Nikon D40 vertical focus problem

Make sure the camera is using the appropriate focus sensor.

Does the problem occur when you focus manually?

Are you handholding the camera? Many people don't hold the camera as steady when holding it vertically. Try putting the camera on a tripod or other steady surface and see what happens.

The flash on my camera

There is no top LCD on the D40. Put the camera in AUTO mode (green icon on the dial) and take a picture in the shade. if the flash does not go o, then you have a fault. Send back to authorized repair centre.

Green lines

Due to vertical section failure horizontal line apprears. You did not mention about picture. Green horizontal line means with picture or without picture. With picture means there is some leakage. Without picture only singe horizontal line means vertical section totally not working. Particularly green horizontal line means maybe leads to jungle ic failure. Please mention your simptom clearly what you get and what you will not get both video and audio. It will be helpful to answer. Based on your question this is my small information.
