Fitting replacement film door release catch

The film door release catch on my Canon 300V broke recently and Canon have sent me a replacement but no instructions on how to fit it, although apparently it's 'easy when you know how'! I've removed the six screws in the film door, but the inside is still attached to the outside. I think the LCD display is holding it in place, but I'm not sure. How do i get to the release catch in order to replace it?

I've got the same problem. I contacted Canon but they wouldn't tell me anything because of liability reasons.

I suggest you bring the camera to the Canon service rep in your area and for a few dollars you let them do it. This way, if there is any damage they are responsible.

I don't know the answer for your particular model, but in many of these cameras it is possible to easily do colaterol damage when changing parts.

How can I get repair parts for my eos elan 7 Canon film door?

Remove front cover to get to latch. Be careful not to touch the flash circuit as it can have a nasty 300 volt shock.

Canon parts phone number: 732-521-7230. They used to take credit cards, not sure if they still do. They are really good about ordering by description.

How to replace the door latch on a canon rebel eos ti

The cameras film door has a very small phillips head screw inside the battery doors hinge. Its a pain to take out & replace if you hands are shakey for this screw is so small. Also installing the replacement hinge would be a little harder to install tha removing the broken one.
I hope this information will help you. A camera shop should be able to do it for free if you maybe purchase some items there. Most shops which are very small and privately owned shops will do this for you

Blank Film Developing

It likely did not catch when it was first loaded, and as such never advanced through the camera. Open the back of the camera, with no film in it, then set the shutter speed to 1, advance the film advance lever and take a shot. You should see the shutter curtains open and then close a second later. Then advance the film lever again and watch to see that the sprockets are turning. If they are, then the camera is exposing and the mechanics are working properly to advance the film. Chances are it was just loaded incorrectly.

Photos are dark halfway across as if something was blocking lens.

Take the lens off and charge the shutter. with the film door open hold the camera toward a light. Fire the shutter and if you see half light in the film window the shutter magnets need replaced. Or the shutter is not being charged enough. If so,camera must be disassembled by a repair shop.

AE-1 Didn't Take Pics

Possibly the film did not go through the camera. If it did, the problem may be the 2nd(or closing)curtain magnet on the bottom of the camera. When the magnet is working the closing curtain of the shutter is held back 1 to 1000 miliseconds-depending on the shutter speed selected by you. 1ms=1/1000 sec. 1000ms=1 sec. You can tell by 1. removing the lens 2.setting the shutter speed to the "B" setting 3. opening the film door and looking through the camera 4. releasing or firing the camera and keeping pressure on the release button. If the magnet is working, the shutter will stay open as long as the release button is kept pressed down. The closing curtain will close as soon as the release button is released. When the magnet fails, both curtains travel across the film plane together and no exposure is made. Sometimes there is corrosion on the magnet where the wires connect. Sometimes there is some foreign substance or object that interferes with the face of the metal unit that attaches to the magnet when the camera is wound. Sometimes the magnet just fails and needs to be replaced. If the magnet checks out OK the problem may be in the circuits that control the release of the magnet. If this is the problem, the camera needs to be looked at by a competent repair shop. Just so you know, new parts are getting hard to come by, but there are tons of used cameras around that parts can taken from. Hope this helps.

Canon EOS Rebel G

From the Canon Help Email - this worked for me: If you are using an EF series Canon lens, please remove the lens and clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser. We also suggest that you remove the film and battery for 15 minutes; ensure that the battery has a full charge and reinstall. If the issue persists, we suggest testing the camera with a different EF series Canon lens. Should this persist with a different lens, then the camera body itself will need to be examined.
