Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive
I have connected the drive to a windows laptop & a MacBook. In neither of them does it work. it doesnt indicate its receiving power nor can it be seen in the desktop or My computer. I suspect a bad power inverter inside, but not sure. How can I get the information out? If the HD is good can I replace the outershell?
Is it a 2.5 or 3.5 inch drive? 3.5 requires an external power. 2.5 usually runs off the USB. However, some drives require more power than 1 USB port can provide. For those, the manufacturers include a dual-headed USB cable. The dual-heads plug into 2 USB ports. With this type of external drive, you can listen to it spin up, but not detected by the OS.
If it's not spinning up, then taking the case apart probably won't do any good. Take it to a local computer shop & see if they can diagnose it for you.
