Question about Optoma HD65 DLP Projector

Menu missing "Signal" category under "Setup"

My video card is having trouble syncing with the projector causing periodic scan lines and funky colors to oscillate. Other computers don't have the same problem and my computer does fine with other monitors. It seems I need to adjust the "phase" or "tracking," but my menu is completely missing the "signal" subcategory in "setup" that the user's manual claims is there. Where is it? Do I need a firmware update or something? How would I do that if that's the case?

I figured out that the option was only missing because it only shows up if using analog or component input. (I was using HDMI). Well, I'm still having the problem using DVI to HDMI. Anybody know why that's happening and how I can stop it?

@ ridinghood, Solution #1: No, changing the refresh rate doesn't help unfortunately :(

@ridinghood, 1st comment of Solution #1: So I'm using a MacBook Pro that has an old DVI output. As far as I understand, DVI and HDMI are pin for pin. When I try plugging in to the projector through DVI/HDMI (with a DVI-to-HDMI cord), the weird colors and scan line stuff happens, but that doesn't happen when I use my DVI-to-analog converter and use the analog on the projector. I don't think it's a projector-level problem, because other friends' MacBook Pros do fine with HDMI, but it's also not just my DVI, as it works with LCD monitors. The other weird thing is that I have the problem both in Windows and Mac OSX, which tells me it's not just a drivers problem, but hardware/firmware level. Thanks for your help ridinghood.

If you are using your computer see about changing the refresh rate in display properties settings (advanced) then click on the monitor tab.

I am sure you adjusted the setting in "overscan"? You are correct on the phase settings only with an analog setting that this will work this is the case with all projectors. You mentioned "DVI to HDMI" are you converting your computer signal to this method? If so are there any settings in the computer video card that you can tweak?

  • ridinghood Jun 06, 2010

It sounds like it is in your computer with the dvi to hdmi input. Since your friends work and i am sure there using the same cable you are testing it out with. When you test it on lcd monitors "your not using the dvi to hdmi cable"? u most probably using dvi to analog? What do you think the difference is between your friends laptop and yours? Do you compare settings, etc. I don't think i am being much help because you are taking the correct steps to find the issue.

How do I get my monitor to display again? monitor has a blinking blue power light but a blank screen

This one might be a bit tough, however, we should be able to get you in the right direction.

The setup: unplug your display cable from your computer to your monitor so it is not connected to the computer but it does have power.

Monitor
1. Turn on the monitor
2. It should search for a signal and indicate DVI/HDMI/VGA in some graphical manner on the screen.
3. If it does show this scanning try accessing the menu.
4. If you can access the menu and it showed the signal scan then your graphics card or drivers are likely the cause. See GC/Driver.
5. If you DO NOT see the scanning AND the menu does not work then your monitor needs a new digital visual interface board (T-Con).
6. If you DO see the scanning AND the menu does work then you need a new control board.
7. If you DO NOT see the scanning AND the menu does work then you have a failing DVI (T-Con) board.

Graphics Card/Driver
1. Find any other monitor that you can use which will include any TV's or displays you have access to that can hook up to your Graphics Card.
2. If the card can push an image to the display it is good.
3. If the card pushes any garbage signal, color wash or funky image the drivers may be out of date or corrupted. Uninstall the drivers and update as your card manufacturer provides.
4. If you see no image at all then it is very likely your card is dead. Replace as needed.

In most cases your monitor likely blew a capacitor on your board or a chip was burnt out on your DVI (T-CON) board. You may be looking at a 20-80$ investment to have the part replaced by a local repair technician. If it is the Graphics Card that can run anywhere from 20-2000$ as your taste and budget allows.

How do I change the format from 480i to 1080?

First, you need to verify that you have an HD source (720p, 1080i) connected to your M1-DA port or RGB component video ports.
S-Video and Composite video inputs are not capable of providing a 1080 signal. Then, in the menu, go to settings and then select "Sources". Verify that the source you want to use is checked and enabled. Once you exit the menu, perss source on the keypad until your selection shows up. If you have a good signal, it will sync up and display your program. To verify what signal you are watching, go back into the main menu and select "About" It will show which source you are using and what the format is.

Why does my projection look green if the colors are right on the computer?

I'm going to guess that you are using an RGB cable to connect to the projector and the projector is expecting a composite signal. The composite signal would be what uses a yellow connector when you use hte red/whjite/yellow type of cable. All of the video is carried by the yellow. If the projector is expecting this and you send out component (RBG in this case), then the only video signal processed is the green. Since the green also contains the sync signal, the picture will be seen but green.

Check the menus on the projector. You should find a video selection area that will allow you to change to component input.

Please update this if you have any more questions.

On the left side of the screen the red color is bleeding off the other colors and causing the picture to be blurred. It is not across the entire screen. Just on the left portion. Do I need a new bulb or is...

That is *not* a lamp problem. Definitely sounds like you have a some sort of video processing problem with the red signal. Just to be safe, try a complete factory reset in the menu. Sometimes, the auto-sync and other such functions cause the image to distort. This can happen if the projector is used with multiple image sources and the unit has to resize the image--it does this using mathematical algorithms. If resetting doesn't help, you need to explore repair options...remember, the unit has been around for awhile--shop around the search engines for quotes.

My projection tv has ghost pic you can see three dfferent color lines

Go into the tv menu and look for "convergence" this is a setup issue that can sync your colors. Projection tv's have 3 projectors inside, each a different color, if they get out og sync it can cause a blue or red ghost. In your tv menu you can look for noise reduction and turn it on also scan velocity modulation turn that on as well. These can all be found in the menu under picture or setup.

just a shot in the dark. this reminds me 'bout a problem with a Optoma (or maybe it was a Ask) i fixed. In that setup menu (on the proj), i was able to adjust the sync signal on the input. (I don't mean the the screen refresh rate..)  Just tried gradually step by step. Worked then!
