If this is a Manual transmission and if you push hard and a shifter it still pops out your shifter may be out of adjustment. The other possibility is the synchro teeth on the gear are in a slider rings are worn in the transmission needs to be rebuilt. Good luck.

1st and 5th gear jumps out of it's position. Revers gear do's not engage gear from time to time

if this is a manual gearbox then its the indent springs in the selector rod movement inside the gearbox and this will involve removing the gearbox if i have correctly located the fault ,but without the make and model of vehicle i cannot say for certain as it could be the gearchange mechanism movement inside the cars cab and if tis cable then a outer sheaf on a cable could be loose and come out of its crimped holder

I have a kia rio it jumps out of reverse but hold the gear nob and it works

Hi there,

When a 5-spd gearbox cannot hold reverse, this means either:
* Worn or mal-adjusted Shift Linkage
or
* Weak Shift Rail Spring

If after having the Shift Linkage adjusted the reverse gear still pops out , then you may be facing some more costly work in your gearbox. Depending on the quote to repair your existing box, it may actually be cheaper to fit a 2nd hand one.

Good luck..

In 2008 first 4th gear and later 2nd and 4th gears kept jumping out. I was told that all the bearings and other components inside the gearbox were worn out so Ihad them overhaul the gearbox. A few months...

a gear box place should know more than me but this can also be caused bye a little ball bearing and spring .... these 2 things push on the selecter shafts and fit in to a groove that holds the shaft in the right spot .. that is what u feel when u change gear and it stays in position ....... the spring - springs can looz tention .. brake or the ball can wear or the groov it sits in to can do the same making it not hold in position ... 2nd and 4th are prob on the same shaft and this problem useully happens under load or taking off quick ........ i think they call them retainer springs and ball

My mazda e1600 jumps out of reverse after replcing the clutch and presher plate

Check that the linkages are connected corectly and are not fouled stopping the gearbox going all the way into gear. Also There is a posibility that you have gotten dirt of something betweeen the bell haouing and the back of the engine or the dowels are missing. This can cause a missalignment of the front shaft of the gearbox causing the gear contact to push each other away causing it to jump out of gear.

Terrano gearbox keeps jumping out of overdrive and

Nissan Terrano's have an Electronic Computer that controls the gearbox. It is hidden behind the left hand rear Speaker box, right hard up against the rear seat back rest. This system controls all functions regarding the gearbox and it's rev rates. If your vehicle is shifting back on long drives then it is possible that the computer sees any slight increase in revs as a desire to "Kickback" the gearbox to a lower gearing, hence it dropping out of overdrive. Unfortunately a gearbox specialist with a computer "Plug-in" is needed to fix this, but it is fixable. This problem should not be too expensive in comparison with a new gearbox.

Toyota Landcruiser VX 4.2 turbo diesel automatic

Bit of a long shot, but check the output of the throttle position sensor with a multimeter.

Also, check that the low range switch isn't continually reporting that you are in low range. The gearbox computer adopts a VERY harsh shift pattern in low range, holding gears until approx. 3500 RPM and even then producing very hard shifts.

Try unplugging the connector that carries the low range sense signal from the transfer box under the vehicle and see if that makes a difference.
