Whirlpool duet dryer drum binding up after replacing belt. What should I look for?

  • The drum has to be seated properly on the front and back panels. The rollers that the drum rides on have to be free and not in a bind. The belt has to be installed properly thru the the idler.

The back brakes on my 02 cavalier started to lock up the back tires when I hit the brakes. I put new brake pads an wheel cylinders on both sides. It was really hard to get the drums back on and now(1 week...

Sounds like the brake shoes are binding on the drums. After a run put your hand on the drum (carefully) and confirm that excessive heat is not being generated by binding brakes.
If it was hard to get the drums on It may be that the adjusters were not backed off. This is normally done to get the drums on and then the brakes adjusted in the usual manner.

ARE you sure you have checked the box on print properties on you computer that says either left binding or top binding have to let the copier know which way to do binding will go so you don't have to flip the paper over to read correctly or it will be upside down on the other side. Left binding like reading a book, top binding like a classroom lecture notebook.

Dryer won't start.. has power sounds like something binding. long buzzing sound when starter depressed. try once or twice and then nothing for a while. come back try again ..long buzzing sound again

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

You did not include a make and model number for your dryer so... this is a GENERIC response. With a make and model number we can better help you.

The long buzzing your hearing is the motor winding trying to start the motor. After 30 - 45 seconds if the motor does not start the thermal overload will cycle and prevent further attempts for around 5 - 6 minutes until the motor winding cools down.

Causes of a dryer motor not starting:
1. Binding.
a. Broken dryer fan blade lodged inside the blower housing
b. Motor start switch failure
c. Motor bearing failure

2. Dryer drum bearing / roller problems
a. The drum can be bound up and dragging on internal components of the dryer
b. The Idler pulley bearing may have failed and it is now a brake.
c. Front or rear drum seals failed / pinched against rear or front of the chassis
d. Drum roller bearing failure and is now a brake.

Reach inside the drum and see if you can turn the drum. If you can not turn it with a little effort, you need to find out where the binding is inside your dryer.

This is the best I can do for the moment without a model number. With a Make and Model number I can provide parts listings and item numbers of where to check.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Hey when we turn on our dryer we get a burning smell and the drum doesnt turn, any ideas? we think the engine might have burnt out?

Either something is binding the drum, or the motor has failed. Can you turn the drum by hand? If you can, then most likely the motor has failed, if you can't turn it by hand, then the drum is stuck and the motor just isn't able to turn it until you find whatever is binding the drum. You might have to remove the back panel to get in to see what might be causing the problem if it is binding.

Let me know what you find with this.

Will not start consistently. Will make humming

This is a very hazardous condition and you should not use the dryer until it is repaired. First, unplug the dryer! Then, remove the front panel screws (if any), and gently pry it off of the cabinet, door and all. The panel is usually retained by steel clips. Next, check for foreign objects that may be causing the drum to bind. Whether you find anything or not, slide the drive belt to the rear and lift out the drum. Notice how the drive belt is routed through the motor drive pulley and belt tensioner.
Inspect the motor, drum suspension rollers, and belt tensioner for any binding or discoloration. However, if the motor was throwing sparks, replace it. Check wiring harness and connectors and repair or replace if damaged.
If any drum suspension rollers or the tensioner pulley binds, replace them. They're relatively cheap. Upon reassembly, make sure the drive belt is routed correctly around the tensioner before reinstalling the drum, being careful not to twist the belt. Upon reinstalling the front panel, turn drum by hand at least two revolutions -- it should turn smoothly. Plug it in and test the operation.

ritz, it could be the motor, but eliminate these other things first. You want to make sure you don't have a drum roller in back binding, I see a lot of this on Maytags. Another would be the blower wheel, it could be binding or have something stuck in it. The blower wheel will be in front. You will have to remove the door, remove the screws holding the hinges in, the door will lift up and off. Then the spacers on the other side. Now the front panel will pull out and off. Here you can get a look at the blower wheel, and rear rollers. Just hang the door back on and close it to run it. You may have to remove the front drum support and remove the tumbler to get into it further if necessary. Catriver.
