SOURCE: Paper comes out looking a shade darker, almost dirty.

9 out of 10 times this is caused by dirty contacts. It can also be caused by some electrical charge getting to the paper as it goes through the printer or a faulty (weak) power supply board. Your first check should be to remove all of the consumables and clean all metal contacts with an alcohol wipe or similar. Hope this helps.
Please take a moment to rate this solution, thanks.

SOURCE: Prints without any errors but no ink on the paper.

if you have new print head assembly and cartridges, and waited for flow, and the printer is MECHANICALLY sound (not dropped or G-force damaged), then all that is left is improper cartridge installation. You may not have the cartridges fully inserted/, or maybe they are not PROPERLY inserted. Look for a snap when in place (and no wiggle). I suspect this is your problem, because one symptom you mention, ink accumulation INSIDE the head/cartridge cradle, is VERY rare -unless the cartridge is inserted improperly. The cartridges/head assemblies have VERY good seals to prevent leakage. Unless the o-rings/seals are damaged, leakage outside the seal just does not happen at all, normally.

*New head/cartridge installs can take several hours -sometimes even a day in cold weather, for small iP90-like printers to saturate the heads -and print.

SOURCE: smudging when printing photos, but not colour textprinting

(1) Most photopaper is made to be printed on one side only. Check to see that you are printing on the correct side. (2) You mention new cartridges. Are they the same brand as cartridges you've used before? If they're a different brand, you may want to try whatever worked before.

The error means you have a paper jam or one of the sensors is incorrectly reading a paper jam. Unplug the unit and check all areas for a jam. Remove the back Jam Clear Cover and check inside there. Remove the Paper Tray and check that area and check if the PE actuator is in place behind the paper tray. Lift the scanner flatbed unit and check inside the print carriage area. Look for scraps of paper at the sides of the platen. These scraps that may be soaked with ink and difficult to see. You may need to move the print head to see both sides.

If the PE actuator is missing, contact Brother for a replacement. Put in the replacement if needed.

Close the scanner unit, replace the clear jam cover (put it on correctly) and replace the paper tray. Plug in and turn on the printer and see if the message clears. If it doesn't clear, access the Ink or Ink Management menu (either directly by a single key or through the menus). Do a test print for Print Quality (Color). If the quality is good, press 1, the up arrow or + key to select Yes. Then press the Stop/Exit button. If the print quality is poor, clean the print head.

If the jam message occurs again, check for more scraps of paper inside the unit as above. Make sure your paper meets the specifications for the printer and isn't getting excessively humid. (Paper will pick up moisture from the atmosphere so keep only the needed amount in open reams or the paper tray.) Fan the paper in the tray and then return it to the paper tray. Make sure the paper is flat in the tray and that the guides are just touching the edge of the paper.

If it still doesn't clear, the unit needs service.

I hope this helps.

Why is there a black stripe on the backsid of the paper when I try and print?

you need to clean the bottom plate, heres how:
1 Make sure that the printer is on and then remove any paper from the Rear Tray.
2 Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray and extend the Output Tray Extension.
3 Fold a single sheet of A4 or Letter-sized plain paper in half widthwise, and then unfold the paper.
4 Load this and only this sheet of paper in the Rear Tray with the open side to the front.

(A) Load the paper after unfolding it.
5 Open the printer properties dialog box.

6 Click the Maintenance tab, and then Bottom Plate Cleaning.
7 Confirm the displayed message and click Execute.
The paper cleans the inside of the printer as it feeds through the printer.
Check the folded part of the ejected paper. If it is smudged with ink, perform Bottom Plate Cleaning again.
Important --
Even if the Cassette is selected as the paper source, paper will be fed from the Rear Tray.
Do not perform any other operation while the bottom plate is being cleaned.
If the problem is not resolved after performing cleaning twice, the protrusions inside the printer may be stained. Clean them according to instructions. See Cleaning the Protrusions Inside the Printer.

look inside where the printhead moves left and right and look deep inside to the left and right, you might have to move the printhead, you might see some paper inside. but the other possibility is that your printer absorber box is full of ink, and it needs replacement.

Ink cartridges will not slide due to leaking ink underthe printer

Sorry to hear about the mess. Let's start with the clean up of the ink. Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe up the ink that has spilled out of the cartridge. Wipe gently so you don't do any damage to the internal components of your printer. The ink will likely color the inside of your printer - That's okay. Just make sure you get anything that puddles. It should not look wet.

On to the non-moving cartridge carrier. The standard fix for this is to do a hard reset on the printer. Follow these steps.

1. Unplug the power cord and remove the paper from the paper tray.
2. Move the carriage all the way to the right, close the lid and reconnect the power cord.
3. The printer will make some noise as it starts back up. Wait until it stops making noise.
4. Open the printer lid. The carriage should return to its normal position.
5. Try printing again.

If this does not work, then damage has been done to the internal components. You will need to get the printer serviced by a repair person.

Cannon Pixma MP500- I get a solid black line on the reverse side of a printed page. Went through all the cleaning procedures and new cartridge, no change.

For some reason, the printer is designed to dump ink into the bottom of the tray before feeding on the paper. The paper is then dragged over the ink, leaving the black line. This is a software issue, not a hardware one. I'd advise that you update all of your print drivers, as well as your firmware.

A temporary fix is to clean the rollers and base plate of the printer for ink spills.

Check for any bits of paper or debris that may be caught in the printer. Be careful to feed in the paper perfectly straight, as this printer does not have good rollers, and it will cause paper to break off and cause problems. If any debris has caught or absorbed ink, it will cause the back of the paper to smudge, and you have black lines.

Hp960C leaking ink

1. If you have them, go ahead and put on your latex or close fitting gloves. Ink generally gets everywhere and can be hard to clean off your hands. It’s important to not work on a printer that’s plugged in. However, sometimes certain inkjet printers will not let you change the ink unless the printer is plugged in. So, if this is the case, go ahead and life the cover of your inkjet so that the cartridges can be removed. Once that’s done, unplug the printer.
NOTE: Be sure not to touch the metal part of a inkjet cartridge, because the natural oils on your hand could inhibit the communication of your cartridge and your printer.
2.
To clean the inkjet cartridges, check to see if your cartridge’s have both ink and a print head together.
Together (most common):
Take a paper towel and fold it in fourths. Then add either alcohol (preferred) or Windex to one side of the paper towel. Now, wipe the bottom of the cartridge on the paper towel to clean off the print head in a flower like fashion. It is normal that ink comes out of the cartridge even after you think it’s all clean (that’s what it’s supposed to do).
Separate (less common):
Do not clean the ink cartridges themselves. Since they doesm’t have a print head and generally don’t control the amount of ink that flows out the bottom, you can get pretty messy if you tried to clean the ink itself. Take the print head and separate it from the ink cartridges, then follow the above directions to clean the head.
3.
Now take another paper towel and fold it again in fourths. This time spray a thin layer of Windex on the paper towel and clean the ribbon if it has any major ink blotches on it (see picture to better understand this step).
Whenever a printer finishes its document, your ink “rests” or docks usually on the right or left of the printer. Over time, this area can harness a ton of ink mixed with paper dust. This makes a gooey substance that’s can cause big image problems on the paper since every time you print, you run the chance of hitting or docking on this mountain of gooey ink. To clean, we’re not going to use a cleaner, because if you can see a buildup of ink, generally, it’s much too hard to get to and can be very messy. In the picture, I’ve highlighted where this printer’s “reserve” is starting to build up.
4.
After a while of printing, you may notice that the inside of your printer has a thin film of ink inside everywhere. Although it doesn’t really matter when it’s on the plastic, this can affect the oil on the stabilizing bar, making it harder and harder for the print heads to move. Sometimes it gets so bad that you can hear a “crunch” or “grind” and the end of a printing job. It may appear that the printer isn’t aligning right or can’t dock, but sometimes the lack of oil is the cause.

Larges spots of ink on paper

That used to happen to me as well. It turned out that when I left the paper standing in the tray, it would bend slightly at the end. I stopped leaving the paper in the tray in the afternoons and only putting it in when i needed to print and that seemed to solve the problem. A hassle I know but thats the cost of buying a photo printer to do office jobs.
