You can start by screwing both in all the way and backing out 1/4 turn. Try to start the motor backing out 1/8 turn till it starts and when it's warmed up adjust screw till it idles good.

If it goes dead when you go to high speed adjust the other screw in the same way till it doesn't bog down when you go to high speed.

With one screw you can adjust the idle speed, and with the second, located under the carburetor you can adjust the running or load speed.

Hi Charles Gregory
Before you remove or try to adjust your low and high speed jets you should always count the number of turns it takes to lightly seat the idle mixture screw and high speed needle adjusting screws.
Be sure to write the number of turns down on a piece of paper so you will know how many turns from the seated position to open the jets when you go to reinstall them, or if you remove them for cleaning or replacement.
If you have aready tried to adjust them then the adjustments below should get it running for you for final adjustment when warm.
Normally you will adjust your idle jet to 1/2-3/4 turn open from the bottom seated position.
Then you will re-adjust the low speed of the engine when the engine is warm by turning the idle screw in or out till the engine runs smoothly at idle speed, around 1200 RPM.
The high speed jet is adjusted to 1 1/2- 1 3/4 open from the bottom seated position, after the engine is warm.
Then re-adjusted by turning the High Speed jet adjustment screw in or out till the motor runs smoothly at high speed.
Alway use the "lightly seated" method if you have not changed the screw settings.

I am having a hard time getting my carburetor adjusted for my Troy Bilt 2 cycle tiller

First you need to repair the fuel inlet properly. You likely have an air leak the way it is now. You can get a replacement inlet elbow at your local parts shop. Tecumpseh and briggs are a bit different but look very similar so be sure what you have before you go. grab hold of the brass with channel locks or vice grips and pull straight out to remove the old one. Put a dab of oil on the new one, align the way you want it to face and press in firmly. Do not twist or it will break again.
Once the inlet is repaired properly then you can adjust the carb. The low speed jet is the one closest to the motor. The initial settings are 1 and a half turns out for both low and high.

Mantis tiller idle screw adjustment

Start out with 1.5 turns on High speed jdet and 1/2 turn on the low speed. Make sure plug is not wet, better yet install a new one. Clean, fresh fuel and give it a pull.

I would like to know what the factory high and low settings are on carb mantis 2 cycle there are no plastic caps on my jet screws and need to know how many turns out ...

After seating the screws back them out 1 1/2 turns. This should be close enough to get it started. Let the motor warm up a little then, with it idling, turn the low screw in until it starts having a hard time running then back it out until it idles smoothly. Prop up the Mantis so it can run at full speed safely while you adjust the high side. With the throttle wide open, again turn the high screw in until it starts running roughly and back it out until the motor is running smooth. Some say to turn the screws out until the motor starts having a hard time running and then turn it back in half way to where it was running bad at the other end. This doesn't work as some engines don't care how far open the screws are.

Won't start

Remove carburator also remove diaphragms and gaskets, soak carburator in carb cleaner over night, then spray dry. put back together with new diaphragms and gaskets. Triky part is next H-red ( high) L-white (Low) adjusting screws remore plastic caps to allow u further adjusting. This will get your tiller back up and running, let me know if it helps or any questions you might have

Tines continue to work with out touching safety or throttle. they engage as soon as I start the engine.

remove H (high) L (low) plastic caps to allow you to further adjust the flow and you will be going. H (red) further out about 11 threads exposed and L (low) about 8 exposed; adjusting the low side will stop the tines, but remove tines before making any adjustments, thanks

Just bought an older Mantis 2 cycle tiller. The tines engage when the tiller is started. Of course that makes it hard to start with the tines on the ground! I don't believe it was doing this when I...

if the idle is too high the tines wont stop due to the tiller tines are run by a "centrifuigual clutch" which means when you increase the throttle speed the tines will start to turn : there are 2 adjustments you can try,1) adjust the idle screw under the carburetor where the throttle adjustment and a triangle piece of metal touch(your throttle cable wire will be attached to this triangle) ,if the triangle and idle adjustment don't touch and there's a gap between these 2 pieces close the gap by adjusting the 10mm adjusting nut, this will correctly set the idle #2) adjust the idle adjustment screw talked about above till the tines dont turn with throttle set at idle or lowest speed setting
