Well there a lot more possibilities besides rebooting and reformatting. But to answer your question rebooting won't help and reformatting will definitely fix it although you will lose all your data.To format you would use your restore discs that came with your computer or the restore option that boots your computer into the restore portion of the computer. If you provide more information like your make/model of PC, what makes you think you have a virus and whether you have restore discs I an definitely help you further.

Yes reformatting the HDD will delete teh virus on the system and is 100% sure that the virus will not infect teh new operating system that will be installed on the Hard drive ....

try this Link http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/window...s/reformat.htm for XP

a little different with Vista and win7 but will be more faster and less options to chose from in the process... ^_^

I have 9100 dell desktop. I was having problems with comupter and had a virus scan going and then computer rebooted and now I am unable to do anything. Not in safe mode or anything. It says it can't find...

Trying using a boot disk to see if your data is still there. I've seen this happen before and the virus had infected several of the files required for the computer to boot. When the virus scanner cleaned the files and the computer rebooted, the system files were gone.
What ever you do, do not reformat the hard drive or use a system restore disk until you are sure that you have no data that is recoverable on the drive.

Can a virus infected pc be treated instead of reformatting it?

Yes it is possible but it may not fully remove the virus, it depends upon the type of virus infection.
If you have not installed a virus protection program, then this makes your task more difficult.
I would try a WEB base virus removal program first, provided you can connect to the Internet. Try these WEB base virus links first and if successful then install a virus program.
WEB-based Virus Scan Trend Micro housecall
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
symantec - Norton Security Scan
http://security.symantec.com
If all fails then you need to format your hard disk and install Windows again together with the computer's device drivers and your programs.

Want to know the steps to reformat Toshiba - Satellite Pro

Your data - In order to ensure don't copy any infected data backup as few executables as possible. BEFORE restoring your data make sure you have antivirus installed and up to date. Perform a full scan after copying the data back to your lt. Put in the recovery disk and restart your computer. Look for a prompt on the screen to "boot from disk" while it is booting. Press the key it says to press and follow the directions from there. If there isn't a prompt to boot from disk try pressing Alt and F10 while it boots.

Don't reformat it just yet. Tell us what OS you are using, and I can try to help.
I will assume you are using WIndows XP or Vista - what you can do, assuming you have kept your PC up-to-date, is try to run the inbuilt Microsoft anti-malware program.
Click Start, Run, type MRT and press Enter or click OK.
You should get the February 2009 version of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Do a quick scan and see what comes up. If anything is found, reboot and repeat the process doing a full scan (can take several hours).
That should fix and remove the most common virus infections. Let me know how you get on.

If you still need to reformat, you need to use the Dell recovery CDs that came with your laptop. These were a blue recovery/drivers CD and a purple CD for Windows XP sp1 or a green CD for Windows XP sp2. Not sure about other versions of Windows. There is no magic button to reformat with Dell laptops.
