Tomtom problem when it boots. I get a drum roll and a red x through a picture of the memory card thats inserted in the bottom of the tomtom.

Your particular unit runs it's software from SD-Card. you need to check if the card is not damaged: while unpowered push the SD card to come out insert it in a card reader on your computer and see if it reads it ok, if it ask's you to format it it means it's damaged and should be replaced ( the sd card of your tomtom should be replaced with another SD card which you should buy from tomtom for your particular device not a generic one). if it reads just fine reinsert it and start the device again..And about the reset the correct procedure is: Press and hold the On/Off button until your device restarts. This can take more than fifteen seconds.
You should also install Tomtom Home on your computer, connect the device and update it if al the above failed (with a verified and working SD card inserted) - link for Tomtom Home: Windows, Mac

Go to TomTom Home reconnect and then go to device on the tool bar. Select disconnect device and this should free up your device and take the red X off.

You can not use a sd card from one TomTom and put it into another TomTom. The operating system on the card is coded for each individual TomTom device. First try doing a reset with the card installed on your dads TomTom. The reset hole is on the bottom of the TomTom marked reset Use a streightened paper clip, insert the paper clip into the hole until you feel a click then hold it in for 20 seconds. If that didn't work and you have a card reader insert your dads sd card into the reader and make a backup of the everything on the sd card. Just copy and paste everything on the card to a folder on the desktop you have created on your desktop. Next delete everything on the sd card EXCEPT the maps and ttgo.bif or ttgo.bak file. Now that you have made a backup and deleted everything on the sd card except for the maps and ttgo.bif or ttgo.bak open TomTom Home. TomTom Home should see your card and install the operating system back onto the sd card. If it doesn't you may have to insert the sd card back into your dads TomTom and connect it to the pc. It may take a few times of doing this to get the latest operating system back onto your dads TomTom. You can do the same for your TomTom, but you cannot use any thing bigger than a 2 gb sd card. Do not get sdhc cards they won't work. This will only put the operating system for your TomTom onto the sd card. When you have installed the operating system onto your device it will say "no maps found", you will have to buy the map from TomTom..

you can reset the unit by removing it from the cradle and using a straightened paper clip in the reset hole on the unit's bottom

If you do not have a memory card in the port then that is where you will need to insert one.
If you have a memory card installed then it has been formatted and the TOMTOM cannot read the format try removing the card and try the card on another device to rule out defective card then replace if it is not working on the other device. If it is working on the other devise try another memory card and do not format the card or erase the boot up software to make room for more information,

Sounds a little like I may have done something like that myself from the way this was answered.

The GPS unit is reading the card, but cant find any system files to boot from, hence the red cross over the card.
