How do I remove the cartrige from the valve? - Moen & One Handle Tub & Shower Faucet

Does this valve simply turn on by twisting the knob counterclockwise or does it come on by pulling on the knob and turning left or right for temperature?

  • jeffseivers Jun 04, 2010

You need to share the brand of valve with us before any attempt to solve your problem can be attempted. About the only thing in common with shower valves is the difficulty in figuring out how to get the handle off.

Assuming you have a single handle valve, Moen has 2 types of cartridges. The Posi-Temp (replacement cartridge # 1222) turns on and off simply by turning the handle left to right and right to left. The Moentrol (replacement cartridge #1225B) turns on by pulling on it. Handle style does not aid in identification.

Buy your new cartridge before you start and buy genuine Moen! OEM cartridges can give Moen a bad name.

Once the water to the valve is off, remove the handle.

The procedure is the same for either type of valve so use the link below as a reference.

Firmly grab the temperature limit stop and pull it off the valve body. Using pliers, pull out the brass retainer clip. Place the notched end of the white plastic tool that came with your new cartridge onto the old cartridge and rotate as needed until completely seated on cartridge. Put a wrench onto the squared end of the white tool and turn back and forth several times. Remove the tool, grab the brass center of the cartridge with pliers and pull the cartridge out.

Briefly turn the water on ond off to flush the valve of any possible lingering particulate.

Insert new cartridge and use white tool to assure cartridge is all the way in then use the squared end to rotate the cartridge as necessary into an alignment position to reinstall the retainer clip.

Don't print in color

It's your printer head problem. Your printer head is now block. To remove the problem try to follow the proces:
1. Take some amonia solution ( amonia30%+ water70%) in a plastic seringe.
2.remove cartriges from cartrige holder.
3. Then set the seringe nipple in one stick (that is into cartrige holle all time while cartrige is push).
4. Then push the solution in to the black plastic stick.
Use these proces 5/6 time one after another to a black stick.
I think you may relive from your problem.
Thank you

My hot water suddenly stopped flowing. I have a good water supply, the cold is fine. The water heater is full and is hot, but, no water comes from any tap. PLEASE HELP !!!!! Dennis K.

I had the same problem and I took out the two shut off/by-pass valves (unscrewed handle and removed cartrige) to find that lime build-up had virtually sealed the lines so that no water flowed!
Cleaned out the lime deposits and reassembled valves and water flowed once again.

If you soldered the faucet without removing the cartrige you may have damaged it. they have to be removed before soldering. if not, too much solder while soldering may plug port.

Metering faucet drips, installed two new cartriges and filters and I still have a drip.

Using a parts breakdown picture, disassembe of the valve carefully @ the stem by removing the handle then the bonnet with the seals. Check, with a magnifying lens, the condition of the valve seats. There could be some particles or some damage to the surfaces that touch each other. Sometimes a 300 grit sandpaper rotated around those parts remove slight problems. Usually changing the stem (part that turns) or the seat (part that it tightens against) is the cost effective approach. Put it back together cleaned and carefully. Plumbing stores and most large hardware stores have this. Bring the parts with you for a pewrfect match.
