I think it's the fan... it I get a loud grinding noise, often immediately on start-up. Oddly, I can usually silence it by tilting the thing back & forth. Assuming it is the fan, I need recommendation for a replacement & directions to a site that will show me the disassembly process.

Wait Black Screen? AFTER you changed the fan... hmmm... I think I know what the problem is. Okay solution one; You might of hit a wire or cord in the computer when you changed out the fan. Two: You might have the virus 223, get it fixed and it should be going again! Hoped this helped! :D
If the noise isn't coming from a speaker, you could need to replace the fan on your computer. The bearings for it might be busted, another issue could be the speaker wire isn't fully connected internally, which you could fix by popping off the top power panel area and fastening the speaker wire in it.
I hope this helps, if not I apologize. The question isn't super vague, but it still has holes in it. :) I can to help more if you post more about the issue.
Hi again. It sounds to me that the PC is overheating, get a can of compressed air and give short blasts through the air vents and the CPU fan (located underneath the laptop) once your happy that all the dust has been blown out restart the PC and it should be quieter from then on.
You only need to replace the fan, not the heatsink assembly.
Your computer repairer can do it or you can do it yourself once you identify the size of the fan and buy a matching one. You may have to solder a new connector on the lead.
The sound you are hearing is probably the fan, This fan has a noisy bearing and will eventually lock up and the fan will stop spinning and therefore the CPU will overheat and shutdown.
The fan needs to be replaced.
It seems your laptop computer is not cooled properly which might be beacuse of a broken cpu fan as you mentioned it makes loud noise.
The reason your laptop turns off by itself is because theres a circuitry built on the motherboard which power offs itself if the internal temperature raises, this is a safety feature to prevent your computer getting burnt.
Please avoid using your computer and take it to a shop where you can have it checked for cooling.
hope this answers your question
