Question about HP Pavilion dv9700t Notebook PC

I plugged in a laptop using a universal laptop power adapter, and now it stinks as if it burned out or shorted before. The adapter probably used the wrong voltage. Should I only replace the power connector board? Or the whole system board?

Connecting a power adapter with the wrong voltage or current can be deadly for most electronics, and especially "sensitive" ones, such as laptops... If I were you, I wouldn't take the risk - and change the whole system board!

Good luck,
Pelu.

Hello,

you are right, the adapter used a wrong voltageand is burnt.

i strongly advice you replace the whole system board.

simply because you might not be able to detect if there is a component on the system board that is affected.

take care

Power Plug? you can use a universal Laptop Power plug supply on these, if it is the model that has a laptop power pack looking adaptor or if yours had the unique white clip connector power chord...you can probably find one of the original power plug adapters on ebay if it is similar to this picture

Will not start

Hello,

It sounds like the DC charging port on the laptop may be damaged, or it may be the power cord...here's how to tell:

First thing....remove the laptop battery, click the battery back onto the laptop and try again. If this doesn't help then read on...

When you put the laptop on the dock, it is getting it's power from the dock connector on the bottom of the laptop. When it is not on the dock, it gets power from your DC adapter. Soooo......take the laptop off the dock and plug the DC adapter into the laptop. Do you see ANY led's light up (on the laptop) when you plug the power cord directly into the laptop? If not, then your DC power adapter for the laptop is probably dead. If you DO see any led's light up when you plug the power cord directly into the laptop but the power button won't turn the laptop on, then the power button on the laptop is the problem.

Take your laptop to an electronics store, and see if they have any universal power adapters for laptops (they come with tips to fit all major laptop brands). Test your laptop at the store with their new power adapter. If this fixes it, then buy the adapter. If this does not fix it, then you should take it to a reputable service shop to get the power button repaired or replaced......or call HP if your laptop is still in warranty.

Hope this helps!

Joe

Usb powered adapters for laptops

Use a universal power adapter. This is perhaps the most obvious solution to your battery woes. Readily found at most retail outlets that carry electronics, a universal power adapter can range anywhere in price from $30 to $100 or more. The adapter comes with multiple tips, one of which will likely fit your laptop's charging port. When plugged in, the adapter will not only power your laptop, but will charge its battery as well.

There at least three possible reasons for your problem.
.
1) You are using the wrong charger, or
2) Your battery may be defective, or
2) If you are using the original charger that came with your laptop, it may be defective, or
3) Your laptop charging port may need to be replaced.

You need to take your laptop to a local computer repair shop to have the problem correctly diagnosed.

This condition can be caused by plugging in an adapter that has polarity reversed (that's what I did with an after-market power supply). Your battery is probably not bad (I changed to a brand-new battery, and it still had the same problem). However, the problem is deeper: I'm tracking down which component on the power board was burned out when this happened. No luck so far.

My Compaq Pres V2000 laptop does not get on with power on switch

Take out the battery and only hook up the AC Adapter to see if the laptop turns on. If it does then you know the battery is shorting out the laptop and either has very little power to turn on the laptop or is shorting out the laptop cause its bad.

If you don't get the laptop to turn on, make sure your using a well known working wall outlet to plug the laptop to and only use the AC Adapter. If you AC Adapter is hooked up and the Green Led turns on then you know the adapter is good.

After those two steps, you can also try taking out the dvd drive and the hard drive. Then try turning on the laptop and if the laptop still doesn't turn on then the motherboard is bad in the laptop.

Burn circuits

The disk is probalby ok , it's probably just the power circuits for the USB/Firewire adapter that got fried,   if need be you could liberate the disk and use directly, or you could use a different Disk adapter to connect it via USB/Firewire again.
