Had no spark on a machine that has been unused and left in a shed for over ten years. It was surprisingly clean but no spark. Removed the plug cap and checked with the end of the lead against the cylinder head, still nothing. Removed the rotor so I could get to the coil and points, the points gap was good although there was a little corrosion/oxidisation on the points. I took the points and coil off to test with a meter, can't check much with it in place as both sides of the points go to earth, one side via the coil. Measuring across the points I had no continuity! I could see metal to metal contact but the meter said it was dis. Looking with a high powered jewelers magnifying glass I could see a slight discolouration of the contact area of the points so I took a folded piece of fine (600 grit) emery paper folded and gently drew this between the points carefully so as not to round the edges, until the metal contact area was shiny metal coloured. Now I measured no resistance across the points, the way it is supposed to be. Replaced coil, points, gapped the points while I could get to them easily, rotor, side case and pull start, tested and saw a nice spark at the end of the lead. Replaced the plug cap, cleaned and gapped the spark plug, and with a bit of clean fuel it started first pull. Stopped it immediately as now I have to replace the engine oil and check everything else before I try to run it.
Cleaning dirty points was a lot cheaper than replacing the points and coil assembly.

Please advise on where to puchase replacement parts for old Qualcast punch classic 30s lawn mowers

Hi howardandjan, You call it "old Qualcast punch" if it's called Qualcast punch it's not that old, it was originally called Suffolk punch (after the horse) and came in 14" and 17" cuts, the 30s (30cm approx 12") was originally called suffolk colt. when Qualcast took over just about all the british cylinder mowers Atco, suffolk, webb etc they started swapping names about but you should be able to get parts from any good mower shop try winchester garden machinery in hampshire always found them helpful

My mower is not cutting level. I have a new base

If the baseplate meets the cutting cylinder across the entire cutting width, it's adjusted properly.

Check that the front roller is level - it usually IS as simple as that.

If the roller has ben replaced with wheels, check that they are the same height.
