That would be in Device Manager not BIOS. there is no BIOS that i am away of that will show a ! on a drive nor lock out a CD Rom drive.

if you tried to format a computer with a disk and it didn't work in 2 different computers, it has nothing to do with the drive and all to do with the disk. Is this disc authentic pressed or is it burned?

Get a new disc and try again.

If this is an external CDROM that you are hookign up, then you need to make sure the drive is working correctly or the cable is not damaged.

You need to format your hard disk. Please note that formatting will erase all you data from the hard disk and all the software including the Operating system.

If you have your OS master CD you can insert it in the cd/dvd drive and restart the laptop. This will detect the OS CD and try to install it. In the installation process there is an option "Format your hard drive". You should select that option. Then it will format, mark the bad sectors, create a new boot sector and install the OS. You will be just fine.

Booting a bootable Windows CD/DVD for a fresh installation when the boot order...

There have been several times that people have been stuck with a virus infected or a corrupt Windows Operating System and are finding it very difficult to get a fresh installation because of a boot order problem. It could also be a clean working Operating System but the user just wants a new one. The PC, whether laptop or desktop, could be a gift from a friend or one that they have been using for some time.

In the case of a gift from a friend, it could be that a forgotten password has been set in the bios and all has been done by the user to gain access but to no avail. There are also situations whereby the boot order is set alright to boot from CD/DVD but the PC just fails to boot from the CD. In these cases, even thought the bootable CD/DVD is in the drive, the PC just boots straight to the unwanted Operating System but you know that your CD/DVD drive works fine.

Here's what to do:
Obtain appropriate screw drivers and carefully remove the hard disk from the laptop or desktop. Now Obtain an appropriate external hard disk connector for the type of hard drive you have. In the case of a desktop hard disk, you could easily connect it as a slave hard drive in another available desktop by setting the jumper to the slave position (could be primary slave or secondary slave depending on the drives in the PC).

Try and backup any important files from the hard disk or from the partition with the Operation System in the case where more than one partition exists on the hard drive. When that is done, then you will need a Hard Disk or Partition Management Software like Windows Disk Management(which can be accessed by right-clicking on 'My Computer' and selecting 'Manage' and the 'Disk Management' in the resulting window). You can also use a third party software.

Now delete the partition and create a new Partition (Primary Partition). Then format the partition (NTFS file system recommended). When this is done, disconnect the hard disk and fix it back into the PC. Now you are ready to install a fresh Windows Operation System. Turn on the PC, Insert the bootable Operating System CD/DVD (e.g Windows XP) and there you go: your PC will automatically boot from the CD/DVD.

Wish you all the best.

I have a Emachine T5212 and im trying to reformat my hard drive but my internal dvd drive is not recognized.I brought an external dvd drive, but everytime i try to erase my hard drive it tries to load from...

First you need to have media ready to install once format is compelte.

You can not format a drive you are currently using an operating system unless you run the operating system setup disc in which case you would be booting and running from cd once you start reloading you main drive.

So if you are loading windows .
Review steps below if when you boot you do not have option to select boot device

Boot you laptop / pc and get into the BIOS
<normally f2 or f8 , f12 depending on system.>

Change the BOOT order to cdrom as primary \ you may see the device as USB CD/DVD rom with the actual name of brand there.

Save and exit

Have operating system in cd/dvd rom attached to device

Once it starts to load you will see BRIEFLY in the upper left corner PRESS ANY KEY TO LOAD FROM CD ROM or something similar... stop reading this and press a key ........

From there it should prompt you for setting up a new os, I prefer linux myself but in windows or linux in the setup process you have the option of just loading the operating systems or DELETING THE PARTITIONS and FORMATTING the drive, therefore wiping i .

NOTE: THIS IS NOT WIPING YOUR DATA, if you are trying to hide something, wipe from your drive past **** you never wanna share with anyone again..... repost under how do i wipe my hard drive clean .. its a completely different story .. not hard but different.

How to format my computer

if you mean, format the hard drive and install your operating system again, if you use Windows, insert the Windows CD to your CD or DVD drive, restart the computer, then tap F12 a few times while the computer is restarting. Once you are on the One Time Boot Menu, select CD/DVD and press Enter. Pay attention on the screen and press Enter or any other keys when prompted to boot to the CD. Then just follow the prompt to install Windows and you will be given an option to reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows. CAUTION: This will delete all data on the hard drive so be sure to save a backup before you try to reformat the drive.

With a new hard drive you have to first format and install an operating system before it will work. Insert the hard Drive and connect up the DVD, set system BIOS to Boot from removable media IE: The DVD, and insert a Windows setup CD/DVD in the DVD drive, boot of that DVD, and proceed with the install following the instructions. That will install a Windows operating system.

I want to format my pc but not sure how to.it was easy on my old lap top but this one i cant seem to figure it out

what operating system are you installing?
Go into bios at start up; press del or f1 and set your DVD drive to be the first boot option. Put your operating system install disc in the DVD drive and save and exit bios. When the PC restarts it will ask you if you want to boot from CD. hit a key to start from CD. The operating system will begin to install and give you the option of where to install. At this stage you can also select to format the hard disk make partitions or delete them. On Win7 and vista these options are available when you choose advanced from the hard disk selection screen.

Is the hard drive seen in the system bios?Once you upgraded the hard drive did you re-install the operating system.Remember this,,, if the operating system on the drive belonged to another system you will encounter issues when the bios and the new hard drive starts to interact resulting .If you have data on this drive make a back up so you may restore it once the new operating system is installed.
Good luck
