Question about Computers & Internet

Hi there, I just bought a LaCie Rikiki 250 GB hard-disk, and even got the software working; however, the software tells me it only has a capacity of 9,99 MB, which renders it unusable for just about anytjing. Before I bring it back to the store, I thought I might try this. TIA; Peter, Netherlands

Checking reviews of this drive, I've read the included Lacie utilities are on a separate partition that is ~10MB. The empty hard drive space should be on the next drive letter (for example if the software was on drive E:, the empty space should be on F:) .

Your hard drive is most likely dead, you need to call the manufacturer and have them send you a replacement, the warranty should cover this.

Hi.

This is normal. You will never get all the capacity for a USB key or a hard drive. The missing space is for format purpose and hard drive maintenance.

Hope it helps

If I try and format my LaCie drive through my computer its capacity shows as 9.99 MB why is that if I do format it (NTFS) will it have the correct capacity of 250G

You may have two or more partitions on this hard drive. If you delete all the partitions and then format the hard drive then you will have the full unformatted 250 Gb capacity.

Check with LaCie's support site at http://www.lacie.com/us/support/ and it's a good idea that you write down the serial number of your external disk.

Formating hard disk

IF the old PC motherboard will recognize the drive while booting up, Windows 98 will also see the drive after boot-up. You may have to reformat the drive into smaller partitions.

All you have to do is physically install the drive in your old computer and attempt to boot. After the computer boots up, if the drive does not show up shut down and put the drive back in your old computer. Use the manufacturer's partitioning software available on their website to change the drive from one 250 Gb partitions to five 50 Gb partitions.
