Either the air conditioner has a problem, or you've tripped a breaker to the outlet. Make sure the outlet is still good (measure it with a voltmeter set to a/c, or try some other device to check the plug). If the outlet has no voltage, reset the breaker, then turn the a/c on. If the outlet has voltage, the unit will have to be troubleshot. The problem could be many things, and one thing you can try is to set the thermostat on the a/c to the coolest position to see if the thermostat on the unit isn't quite working right. If the unit doesn't come on then, the problem could be a bad switch, startup capacitor, or electrical control circuit controlling the compressor, including relays, or the compressor could be bad. You can check the filter to make sure it's not clogged, and if the unit has a condensation pump (I'm not sure if it does or not), check to make sure the reservoir's not full (the unit will not come on if it is). If none of the things you can check yourself works, of course, the unit will require servicing. Make sure you get an estimate first, since you can often find slightly used units for a steal at flea markets and garage sales. Oh one other thing, make sure the timer isn't set, and delaying the unit from turning on. Hope this helps, and you get your unit running!

What does the code E1 mean on my sharp a/c

It is a clean filter message. make sure filter is cleaned and reset as follows:
1. Power down the air conditioner using the "power" button on the front
panel.
2. Unplug the air conditioner from the wall socket.
3. Hold the front panel "power" button down and plug the air
conditioner in. Continue to hold the power button down as the machine
goes through a brief test sequence (fan & compressor each come on
briefly, etc). There is a "beep" sound at the end of the test sequence,
and the machine will be off. At this point, you can release the power
button.
4. Unplug the air conditioner.
5. Plug the air conditioner back in.

All of a sudden it stopped working. The display now only blinks STOP. I tried unplugging it, resetting it, pushing the on/off button. Nothing happens, it just keeps flashing STOP. Very frustrating

I had the same problem until i opened the drain and got it nice and clear. Pushed the reset button and now it works, hopefully thats what fixes your problem.

The unit worked fine when i last used it in the fall. I plugged it back in today and all the buttons lit up for about 1.5 seconds and then all the buttons went dark again. So I pushed the "on"...

I have had a problem like this in the past you can try taking the electric access panel usually on the side of the equipment. then look inside you will see a wiring harness inside and it literally takes nothing to bump it loose. This happens when people move these units they are pretty fragile and can be tempermental. Make sure the unit is unplugged while you adjust the wiring harness. If that deosnt work your display board is probably bad. Hope that helps

I have a Sharp Comfort Touch AC displaying E-1. ??

This is a reminder to clean the air filter. It happens every 720 hours of operation. Here are the steps to get it back up and running:
1. Power down the air conditioner using the "power" button on the front panel.
2. Unplug the air conditioner from the wall socket.
3. Hold the front panel "power" button down and plug the air conditioner in. Continue to hold the power button down as the machine goes through a brief test sequence (fan & compressor each come on briefly, etc). There is a "beep" sound at the end of the test sequence, and the machine will be off. At this point, you can release the power button.
4. Unplug the air conditioner.
5. Plug the air conditioner back in.
6. Congratulations! You should now be able to operate the air conditioner normally for another 720 hours, but only if you followed the instructions above EXACTLY.

The e1 code is operated by a timer which stops the machine every 720 hours of run time. There are 2 procedures to reset this.

1) unplug the machine. Hold down the power button while plugging it back in and waiting for a beep of about 5 seconds duration. Release the power button. Unplug the machine again. Resume trying to use it as an air conditioner.

2) unplug the machine. Hold down the Mode button while plugging it back in and waiting for a 3 second beep. Release the mode button. The machine will start. turn it off by pressing the power button. Resume trying to use the air conditioner.

If these do not work, the "clean filter timer" is broken and will require you to replace some parts.

(Aren't you glad there is a computer is almost everything?)
