Question about John Deere 3010,3020 Tractor Basic Carburetor Repair

Fuse number 5 shorts out when you turn key on .terminal number 5 onignition switch is the shorted wire

    Sounds like a nice vintage tractor. Is it gas or diesel? Looks like the diesel uses 24 volts for starting, the gas uses 12 volts. It would be very helpful to have a wiring diagram. I did a little web searching and it looks like John Deere wants a fortune ($150) for service manuals for vintage tractors. Not having that, it's difficult. You would have to trace the wiring to find what is shorted out, and that is what's causing the fuse to blow. Can you trace the wiring from the fuse outward -- not toward the ignition switch, but the other direction? That's where the short is.

Nice vintage tractor! Since power feeds from the ignition switch, then to the fuse, the short is likely in the wiring or component fed from fuse #5. If you can't physically trace the wire to see what it feeds, you'll need a wiring diagram.
Official service manuals are expensive. I didn't find any for sale through internet search either. But how about a trip to the local library? If you live in an agricultural area, your library might have tractor service books on the shelf or available from interlibrary loan. Good luck!

Cant figure out a short in wire harness


Hi, Pennie before diagnosing your blown fuse issue you are going to need a wiring from your service manual a test light, an ohmmeter and plenty of extra fuses. If you turn on your ignition switch and immediately blow a fuse you have a hard/dead short and is usually easy to find. With a test light connected to the hot side of the blown fuse holder start stabbing the wire/s that leads away from the fuse holder and towards the ignition switch, you test light will illuminate validating the short. When the test light fails to illuminate you have passed the short and need to back up until the test light illuminates, then look in the immediate area for the short.
If you driving down the road for 30 minutes or 15 miles and blow a fuse you have soft/flying short and may take some time and patience to find.
If the main fuse/circuit breaker constantly blows/trips while riding you probably have a faulty battery terminal connection. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary. Any other fuses that constantly keep blowing while riding are usually caused by a loose or corroded ground wire in the circuit, which means you have to check, inspect, test each and everyone with and ohm meter set on a low ohm scale 100 ohms or less . Simply touch one lead to the ground source and the other lead to the battery negative terminal, a reading of zero indicates a clean solid ground. Any number reading or infinity indicates a poor ground and needs to be repaired. Poor or weak grounds require excessive additional amperage to complete the circuit which in turn blows the small amperage fuse. I have a 1998 chrysler concorde. The airbag light on the dash stays on and my horn doesnt work. How do i fix this without costing me tons of money?


Could be a wiring problem or the clockspring in the steering column.
You would need to pull the steering wheel and test the circuits.

2001 cavalier brake light fuse blows when turn on turn signal


some times the flasher unit will short out try another unit, make up a test lead with a inline fuse , with the unit removed probe from the hot wire terminal to the other terminals on the block , fuse intact no short , engage flasher switch to left, fuse intact and flasher lights on no short, engage right flasher test again fuse intact ok, if fuse blows short in switch or wiring.

93' Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 keeps bowing the 40amp Ignition fuse. Checked Starter, by jumping it. Starter worked just fine. Keeps blowing fuse and leaving me right back where i started, dead...


Blowing fuses is never an easy direct fix. Its rather a hunt needs some dedication. What I try and do is Figure out what is all on this 40 amp fuse, and one at a time remove something from the system and see if it blows. The key is knowing when it will blow for these tests to work. Keep removing what ever is on the system until it stops blowing a fuse. Then figure out how to single out items on that fuse. Whatever fuse it is the problem is on its path. Check all paths that go to items if no items are easily singles out. Replace as you find ,smash, green corrosion and shady connecters. Looks for heat by finding melted plastic connecters. These are clues. If you have a volt meter, then you will find the problem a whole lot easy, by figuring out what OHMS LAw is for whatever guage wire you are working with and a rough guess on length of known path. Using this you can find smashed and corroded wires quicker. As well as finding a short to ground and even short to powers in some cases. Good luck :)

My Honda Sabre vt1100 keeps blowing the 10amp fuse when the key is turned on


Hi, Anonymous before diagnosing your blown fuse issue check the bottom of your seat if its metal and comes in close proximity to the positive battery post you need to take the necessary steps to ensure there is no contact (electrical tape, thick rubber insulation, hammer a dent in the seat bottom etc.) You are going to need a wiring diagram from your service manual, a test light, an ohmmeter and plenty of extra fuses.
If you turn on your ignition switch and immediately blow a fuse you have a hard/dead short and is usually easy to find. With a test light connected to the hot side of the blown fuse holder start stabbing the wire/s that leads away from the fuse holder and towards the ignition switch, you test light will illuminate validating the short. When the test light fails to illuminate you have passed the short and need to back up until the test light illuminates, then look in the immediate area for the short.

92 Toyota pickup, was blowing efi fuse now its not but when I turn the key it doesn't do anything


A bad short blowing the fuse. Could be in the wiring for that circuit, or bad part, component (like the computer, sometimes a shorted injector).
Check if the fuse still has power to it. Use a test light to check for power at the fuse. If no power, probably blew a fusible link or maxi fuse that is the feed for that fuse block.
Turn key to on-do the warning lights and dash gauges come on? If not, check that power is still getting to the ignition switch. I think there are fuses (AM1 &2?) for the ignition switch, not fusible links.
Shorts in the wiring can be difficult to find, may be buried deep in a wiring harness, one needs to check continuity of wiring to locate wiring shorts, looking for high resistance in a section of wire-you may need a shop to diagnose. If you have a wiring diagram available, could start checking wiring and parts in that circuit.
If you want to get creative, here is how an auto electrician can hunt for shorts: use some jumper wires and hook up a circuit breaker of same rating as the efi fuse in that fuse slot. Now when testing you will not be constantly blowing the fuse-circuit breaker will reset every time. Unhook parts in the circuit one at a time, turn key on so power is going through the circuit, whatever part is unplugged that breaker does not trip, that is the problem-the wiring to it or the part itself. Also do a wiggle test of the wiring: key on, move different parts of the wiring and harness, if you cause the short tripping the breaker (or blowing the fuse if you just keep adding a new fuse each time) then you have found the short.
Here's a heads up: anytime you want to pull the connectors off of the computer, make sure key is off, remove negative battery terminal, pull connectors off the computer, reattach the negative battery terminal. With connectors off examine connector pins for any corrosion or bent pins.
Good luck, get power back to the ignition switch if it is lost, then start looking for what is blowing the efi fuse.

My dls 3500 mower will not start at all, I charged the battery but the engine wont even turn. All the wiring and fuses seem to be ok


I had the same problem. I replaced the wiring harness for a short fix, corrosion in the terminals that connect to ignition switch. This worked for a while. Then replaced ignition switch this also worked for short time. Now I just open the hood to reach behind the ignition switch and wiggle wires while turning key to start until it starts keep wiggling to get good contact. If it won't stop after it starts, wiggle wires after you turn the key to off. It will stop.

Please help asap


1 if you have the f250 with the auto lights your sensor can be broken or shorted out.
2 if you have the regular light switch you have a short in your wiring which creates a loop through your lights. Moste likely near the fuse box. the terminal will get power there from a short.
Take fuse panel out and look for the short in there. those are the only things it can be
