Have you placed the usb cable into another port, if not do so and see if this works.

another thign is to try a new USB cable to see if there is an issue with it. Check the rear of the unit to make sure the usb mini port is not damaged.

When reconnecting it to the computer does the computer recognize the drive and installs it? if so and there is no drive letter, you can right click my computer/computer and click manage. from there you can use the disk managment to set a drive letter. From here you can also check to see if there is a conflict in device manager.

The green light on the MY BOOK ESSENTIAL is continuously flashing but computer does not recognize it. It can't be found anywhere.

If you are using a Windows Operating System that is more current than ME, 2000, or XP, this device is plug and play and will require no drivers. You should simply be able to find it by clicking the start menu in the bottom left hand corner, clicking My Computer, and it should be listed with your other Hard Drives and Devices with removable media It will NOT be drive C:, this is your computers primary Hard Drive. Once you find it, you will then only have to double click it to access it.

If you are using Windows 98, you will want to download the driver found on this page.

Any upgraded Linux or Mac Operating system should also recognize this as a plug and play device, and should require no drivers.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

DVD and CD drives not working

Drive may need a firmware update. If you have internet access then go to drive's manufacturer, and check for an update. There could also be a drive configuration problem, need to see if drives are recognized, by the system. You can right click my computer select explore and look for drives or go to settings, control panel right click system, open, then hardware, device manager. Then look for cd and dvd drives. If you see yellow exclamation marks or question marks then updates drivers. This is a start, try to see if the drives recognized.

Red light, "spinning, dropping noise"

There are some freeware that can recover data from problematic disks (like yours), formatted disks, repartitioned disks etc. since you said that the disk is recognized by the computer. You can try Disk Doctor NTFS, Recover My Files, etc. You may not be able to get all the files (depending on the problem of the disk which seems to be a spindle and platter problem), but at least you would be able to recover some.

I recovered a server recently just using one of these softwares.
