The BIOS update could have caused the unit's fan regulation to fault.
the check disk and actually fixing errors woudl point to the Hard Drive being damaged and needs to be replaced. A full diagnostics is what needs to be done to determine this, i would tell you how but multiple hard disk brands are used on these systems.
The BIOS update may have also changed the performance settings on the unit, this will cause the system to use the CPU maxxed all the time. This will kill the battery quicker. You can check this setting in yoru BIOS.
