He may have caused some type of damage to the picture tube, but usually rainbow effects happen when magnets are present. Perhaps the ball became charged with a large amount of static, which then discharged across the tube, damaging the controlling circuits.

Ok, we just picked up a double french horn for my high school. It seems clogged or blocked. He pulled out the slides to find where the stoppage was and found a part of the horn in the later part that was...

You haven't described what the part was stuck in or what the part itself was. If the part is stuck in one of the tuning slides I would advise not trying to remove it yourself as it could get stuck worse and replacement parts for French horns are not cheap nor are they easy to obtain. If you do try removing it you risk bending the tubing out of alignment so that the slide won't fit back in and be adjustable. You also risk distorting the shape of the tubing at either end which again has bad consequences. That being said if you do try; try to push the part out gently in the direction you think it entered. Use a flexible cleaning tool like the ones for cleaning trombone slides. It looks like a small diameter plumbers snake with a brush on one end and is often covered in plastic to protect from scratches. Use a gentle tapping action with the cleaner snake against the part inside the tube. If it is still stuck in there try to obtain a ball bearing that will easily roll through the tubing but is larger than the part so that it will not get jammed against the part. Drop it into the tubing. Next drop another ball bearing the same size into the tubing from the same end so that it rests inside the tubing against the first one. Hold the tubing in the hand you use the most with your thumb over the end of the tubing that has the bearings in it. Remember you are trying to remove the part in the direction it entered. Next shake the tubing so that you can feel one bearing hitting the other. Do this gently at first. You are trying to make the impact of the second bearing against the first force the part out of the tubing. Also remember that I recommended against all this in the first place. It took me ten years of experience before I got good at it. This is not normal but can happen. Usually it is a foreign object left loose in the instrument case that is the cause. Make sure that the part wasn't originally soldered to the instrument as it will need to be professionally soldered back on. Here is a link to a professional band instrument tool supplier:http://www.ferreestools.com/ Have a look at the tools and you might get some more ideas. Look in Tool Instructions. Good luck.

Colourful picture

Discoloration of this sort is caused by magnetism. All CRT TVs (like yours) have a de-gaussing coil around the picture tube that de-magnetizes the screen (more specifically the shadow mask) every time you turn it on. It is likely that the circuit that controls this coil is at fault. There is probably a cold solder joint where it connects to the main circuit board.

The other scenario is that someone (small child generally) has run a magnetic object very near to the screen, magnetizing the shadow mask (inside the picture tube) and causing a rainbow effect. This is less likely if the rainbow effect is a nice even circular shape. Generally if it's been magnetized by a magnet as described the discolored areas will appear blotchy.

In short, if you have some electronics skills, get in there with your soldering iron and touch up the connections to the de-gaussing coil. If not, find someone who does.

Sony Trinitron Color Rainbow

Usually when a tv is dropped the phospher screen inside the picture tube will detatch making the rainbow color This cannot be fixed as it requires changing the picture tube. Only other thing is demagnatize it with a demagnitizing coil (used by tv techs) but not likely to fix it since it was dropped. You have a bad picture tube.

Dropped Magnavox TV

The shadow mask in the picture tube has shifted from being dropped. The only way to fix the set is to replace the picture tube, which would cost more than buying a new set.

Rainbow colors after a lightning storm

you need to borrow or rent from a repair shop a degaussing coil. Its a big coil of wire that plugs in and has a switch on it. How you use it? With the coil plugged in,but not switched on ,hold the coil in front center , about two inches fron the picture tube. Now switch on the coil and slowly rotate the coil in a circle all the way around the picture tube and at the same time pulling slowy away fron the front of the picture tube. Keep doing the circular motion till you reach about three feet from the front of the tube, turn the coil sideways fron the tube and quickly shut off the coil. This is done with the tv set on. The set should look clear now ,with no color blotches on the corners or the rest of the picture. If it dosent then the pictre tube is bad. If it does look good, shut off the tv set for a hour or so , turn back on the tv set, Is the colors back on the screen. Yes , then ther thermistor or degaussing circuit needs to be serviced, and this is something you will need to call in a tech to service for you cause theres extremly high voltage inside these sets and not for a handi-person to tinker with. But if its good then your all set. Good Luck
