Http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/sm/display.htm#wp1022270 shows you how to get to it. The part should be less than $40. Do a search on "Inspiron 6400 inverter board".

I have a lenovo t420 which has brightness/dim issue and can't correct it by unchecking the auto brightness

There should be a function key to adjust the brightness at the top of your keyboard my laptop is F2 or F3 so at the bottom of the keyboard is a key label FN The Function key looks like a sun with an arrow if you are lucky to have it labelled.
If this does not fix problem you may have a faulty laptop . There is a circuit called an inverter in your laptop that converts DC to a higher voltage AC to run the fluro backlight behind your laptop's LCD screen. If this inverter goes faulty you could experience the symptoms you are seeing. This would require a replacement of the inverter circuit board in your laptop by a repair service centre.

Sounds like you need to think about buying another laptop. Or replacing the LCD screen. Search ebay or amazon for screens.

My Philips X58 Freevents laptop's screen has stopped lighting up, however I can just see that there are my programmes on the screen if I shine a torch onto it. Can you advise the fault and how best...

A faint and barely visible image on the screen indicates that the backlight(s) that illuminates the display isn't powering on. A device called an inverter board takes DC power from the laptop motherboard and converts it to AC power to power the screen backlight.
Before attempting anything below, be sure and remove the laptop battery and unplug the laptop
You need to take the screen apart and check to make sure that no cables are loose that are connected to the inverter board. If everything is secure, the next thing I would do is try to test the inverter board by hooking up an LCD from another laptop to the inverter and turning the laptop on to see if it lights up. If the other screen does light up, then the inverter board is likely good and your backlight needs to be replaced. Backlight replacement, unfortunately, can be very tricky for even an experienced technician, and many will opt to just replace the entire screen.
If you can't test the inverter board, then it might be worth it to order one and see if installing it fixes the problem.

Finally, if you can't or don't want to repair the display problem, then you can always hook an external monitor or a television up to the video port and use your laptop that way.

Good luck!

Why is my computer on but the screen is dark

It's very likely your inverter is gone bad. You will need to test before you purchase a new inverter, plug the laptop into a regular monitor using a video cable, do you see video? If yes, then it's the inverter that needs to be replaced. You will need a technician to replace it for you since it's trick and sensitive.

Where can I find instructions for replacement of the backlight inverter?

It's hard to find a step by step instruction on how to replace a busted backlight because of different model concerns.

If somehow you manage to get through on your lcd mainframe with careful disassembly of the back cover.. then you should watch this. A 2 part recorded video on how to remove a backlight inverter for a laptop. And a video on how to Install a laptop inverter here are the 3 links:

Much appreciated if you rate this help.. thanks

Hi, i have an Acer 5100 and the screen is really dark... can only just make out the screen. I have tried the fn key trick with no luck. I have replaced the inverter and also the screen.... again no joy....

The fault could be a faulty video cable or connector or CCFL lamp or inverter.
Try reseating the video cable/connector that connects to the motherboard first.
If this doesn't work then to determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
