Hello,

what this indicate to you is that the wire which supply power over to the system has been disconnected .

what you need to do to fix up the fan problem is to unscrew (open) the system then trace the wire down to the fan position then you will fine the disconnected wire by it side.

please note, all form of power supply should be OFF before any of this function is carry out .

thank you and thanks for using fixya.

Thanks for the speedy answer. Hubby went out, and I will have him try your solution when he returns.
if it does not work, then I will get back to you.
One thing, though. How does he remove the front of the unit in order to see the wiring? I tried and it seems locked on. is there a secret to pry it off without breaking it?
Also, if the wiring is intact (after all, the lights do go on, and it hums, so I think the air conditioning may be working) what might the next step be?

Yes, I will make sure the unit is unplugged, but I hope he does not zap himself.
I hate to pay a repairman for a simple problem. Money is tight or i would have central air!
    Thank you so much.

My 4 year old Ruud home a/c compressor stopped working. inside fan blows but compressor won't turn on...what can I do prior to calling the gas company who installed the unit...

Ruud parts warranty from factory is 5 years, the capacitor has possible gone out, it will be in the contol compartment on the out side unit and is a dual run capacitor that controls the compressor and fan motor. Recommend if capacitor is bad to replace entire capacitor. As Stated above the parts are under warranty if under five years old. To verify age the date code is in the serial number after the "F" **** week/year of manufacture. Also outside unit has independent power supply so check fuses if any and circuit breaker.

Keeps flashing ES, not cooling. Not even one year old.

The 2 most common issues are a freon leak or the outside unit fan start capacitor goes out. It's more likely a capacitor issue. They fail regularly, especially when it's as hot as it's been this year. I had a fan capacitor go out on one of my 3 units last year and it cost close to $300 for an AC company to come out and fix it. I watched them fix it and it's something that you can do yourself if you know what you're doing and are careful to hook it up right. I have three AC units and another capacitor went out this year and I found a kit with detailed instructions with pictures and phone support at hvacrepairkits.com. It saved me over $200 on the capacitor replacement.

Window unit (110) cools for a few minutes then stops cooling just fan air unit is about 6 0r 7 years old

It sounds like your compresssor is shutting off on an overload. After the overload cools down the compressor comes back on until the overload heats up and shuts the compressor off again. The fan keeps running as it is not on the same circuit as your compressor.

Noise, now starts for a few seconds and dies

the blower motor has shorted out and its taking the motherboard with it. I hate to say this but I think you already know its time for a new unit
the average life span is about 3 years on this model so its had a good run I hope this helps

My Goodman a/c unit will not turn on ..

You have a short circuit in the outside system. Either a bad compressor, bad fan motor or possibly a bad capacitor. Visually examine the capacitor. If it is bulged out anywhere, replace it. Check for burned wires on the capacitor and all other connections.
Remove the compressors wires from the circuit and restart the unit. If the fan runs the problem is in the compressor. If the fan does not run,the problem is with the fan motor.
