Question about Compaq Presario CQ50-215NR Notebook
When this happens, there are a few things that may cause it. First thing is if you get any beeps that are not normal for the system when it turns on.
Beeps other than a quick beep beep, are the result of the computer not passing POST (power on self test). The beeps will let you know the error detected.
If there are no beeps that are not normal for this unit, then i would look next to the screen to see if the inverter or lamp is blown. Look closely at the screen and see if there is a picture but it is really faint. If there is a picture then it is the LCD lamp or inverter, it will need to be serviced to determine which and replace them.
If there is no picture at all, even a faint one then you have a hardware or power management problem.
To clear the power management, remove the AC plug and battery from the system. Hold the power button in for atleast 15 seconds then release. Plug the AC jack in and attempt to boot. If it does not work then move on to hardware.
First thing in hardware to look at is the memory. Remove the memory from the system and try to boot. With no memory you should be a post beep error. If you do then put 1 stick of memory in the system and try it. If it boots, shut it down and remove that stick. Place the other stick in the same slot you just removed the first one from and try to boot. If you don't boot then it is that 2nd stick if you do boot, Repeat these steps but with the 2nd slot. If the system does not boot at all with the 2nd slot that slot or controller is damaged. Take it to a service center.
Another thing you can look at is connecting the unit to an external display or lookign on the keyboard for a lcd button on one of the F keys. hold down Fn on the keyboard then press that, it coudl be that the display is showing to external and not internal LCD.
If none of these work, it is best to have the unit serviced

Unplug the battery and only hook up the ac adapter. See if you can get it to turn on.
If not then take out the memory and then reseat it one memory stick at a time in each slot one at a time. Try turning the laptop on after each reseat, this will check each memory stick and each memory slot.
If you still can't get video then go ahead and take out the hard drive and dvd drive. Now try turning on the laptop again. If you get no video this time then that means the motherboard is bad and would need to be replaced.
