Question about Husqvarna 23 Hp 48" Deck Yard Tractor

Where should I drill a fill hole for my MTD made hydrostatic transmission # 618-0551A? As the transmission heats up I am not able to shift from forward to neutral or reverse. Once it cools it works fine.

Why do you have to drill? No plug? Check out the back of that thing, the plug might be on the side, the back, the front, not necessarily on the top. The fill plug will be the level too, fill it up till it seeps out. Then plug it up. Hope this helps.

I have 1985 John Deere 112L lawn tractor. I'm either looking for an online owners manual or where how to purge the hydrostatic transmission to free axles for rolling the mower while not running

If you have an air compressor set it about 2 lbs and try and blow fluid out. If you have a slurp gun you can suction fluid back thru fill hole.

Hi, the hydrostatic drive if it runs one is non serviceable, basically its sealed for life. If it runs a transaxle its filled with semi fluid grease that can be changed but only by taking apart the transaxle. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

It is the shift fork in the transmission. Bad part design and if you plan to take it apart, use sandpaper and really clean the wheel axle and tine axle before you take it apart.

My MTD 12.5 hp briggs and stratton ride on mower is losing forward speed as though a clutch is slipping especially going up hills or slopes. MIKE

You didn't indicate what model so I don't know if it is hydrostatic drive or not. If it is not hydrostatic drive, it is most likely a worn belt or clutch adjustment. If you don't have your manual you can download one here:
If it is hydrostatic drive it stil could be the drive belt or low water in hydrostatic transmission, or even water in the oil in the hydrostatic transmission. Always list model number when asking questions.

I'm thinking you're low on oil in the hydrostatic transmission. A seal in the transmission may have dried out and shrunken due to years of non-use, and the oil slowly leaked out. Check and fill the transmission. You may still have a slow leak, but it might not be a problem if you check and fill occasionally. Good luck! If this is helpful, please rate my solutions, thanks!

MTD 42 inch hydrostatic drive lawnmower

1...first and foremost check the fluid level and top off with mobil 1 full synthetic 20w50 oil,
2...check the the engine pulley for wear
3...check idler arm spring tention.
inside yout transmission is a center pump section and swash plates and a set of 6-8 pistons , if dirt is allowed into the transmission it causes severe wear to these parts

my recomendation would be to dissasemble the transmission and inspect the pump center section and swash plates for wear....look for tiny scratches on the bearing surfaces, if it is worn then replace parts as needed. these worn parts will cause the transmission to "growl" or as you say "grind"

L111 transmission slips

Is this a hydrostatic transmission if it is check the fluid level. It will really need changing and some are sealed and not to be worked on BUT it is possible to drill a hole in the bottom and top of a sealed unit to change that fluid just don't get any shaving in it. These transmissions must stay clean. The drilled holes must be taped and plugged now you can change that oil just like your car. Don't forget to purge that transmission. By the way they use 20W 50 motor oil.

Yard Machines - Won't shift into gear

The problem most likely is the shaft on which the interlock slides back and forth on inside the transmission. The yardmachines have a continous spinning shaft which ends in a bevel gear. The is an interlock plate which is connected to the Forward Reverse shift lever, this plate slides back and forth and either engages the forward gear or the backward gear. This shaft is most likely galled up, preventing everything from sliding the way it needs to. This is not a difficult thing to fix if you are somewhat mechanical. Disassemble the transmission and check if everything slides
