Question about Kenmore Dryers

Sudden high heat, burning smell after long non-use

My dryer was originally connected to a 4-prong outlet. I've tried to change the cord to a 3-prong one. When I turned it on, it seemed to heat up very quickly and it smelled like something was burning. I've moved a couple of times and haven't used the dryer in about 3 years. Is something probably wrong with the dryer?

Hi,

I would suspect the dryer has a dust build up in it that you are smelling.

Depending on where it was stored it may have something in the venting system of the dryer that is restricting air flow. This would cause the dryer to heat up too fast.

Turn the dryer to a no heat setting like air fluff or the last 5 minutes of the timed dry. Turn the dryer on and fell the exhaust it should be blowing out cool air and pretty strong without clothes in the dryer. If the air is not blowing fast then something is in the air system in the dryer and it will have to be taken apart to clean out.

If the air flow is good it is most likely dust that has accumulated on the heater while sitting for years.

Be sure you connected the cord properly per the installation instructions. If you need those send me the model number from the tag inside the door and I can help locate them for you.

Thank you for the suggestion. The dryer did not heat up on the air fluff setting. If the air flow is good, is it enough to leave the dryer operating on air fluff for a few minutes or is there anything else that I should do?

    I think that is fine.

DON'T DO IT!!! Get an electrician to install a 4 prong outlet for you. Your exposure is DEATH, be safe and get the correct outlet.
When some types of failures happen, you can charge the CASING of the washer. then you can become the connection to ground.
Get the correct outlet, return the three wire plug.

Smelled electrical burning last night and unplugged my GE profile dryer and one of the prongs(3 prong type) was burned

This usually indicates a loose connection. Check the wire connection inside the outlet and the connections on the back of the dryer. Make sure the nuts are not cross threaded, this commonly happens with the fine thread. When a loose connection happens the electricity will generate heat trying to make the connection, the cause of many home fires every year.

Connection dryer has 3 prong and outlet is 4 prong.

You will either have to get a 4 prong cord or 3 prong outlet. I would opt for the 4 prong cord. only difference is the four prong cord has a neutral where the 3 prong doesn't

How do you install a 3 prong power supply cord to a GE Dryer?

DO NOT CHANGE THE POWER SUPPLY CORD.
you can't change the power supply cord.
the cord came with the dryer is 240v. the three prong is 120v. the dryer will burn up. if you change the power cord without changing the regulator , motor, and the heating element.
you need to get a electrician to run a 240v double breaker from the panel to the dryer.

They wire in the same except the green wire will go to a ground screw which should be right in the same area with a green color to it. If no ground screw, hook the green together with the white (center) wire. Hope this helps!

Your issue is as follows;
"iI HAVE A DRYER 4PRONG POWER CORD \. HOUSE OUTLET THREE PRONG NEDD TO CHANGE POWER CORD.DRYER INSTRUCTION CONNECT 4 TERMMINAL.WHAT HAPPEN WHEN CONNECT THREEN TERMINAL."

A 3 prong cord should be wired as follows:

1. 1 end of cord connects to 1 outside terminal.
2. The other end of the cord connects to the remaiing outside terminal.
3. The center wire connects to the center terminal.
4. A separate ground wire should be attached from the dryer chassis, then to a metal cold water line, or an exterior grounding rod.
