SOURCE: Stop Motion Knob

Dear Jim,
I'm sure you have a pair of Channel lock pliers around.Place a fairly thick piece of fabric around the inner knob to keep from scratching it. Grasp it with the pliers while holding the handwheel and turn it to the left. IF you can't hold the wheel to keep it from slipping, place a screwdriver or something else under the needle set screw area, turn the wheel until the set screw is resting against the set screw and then turn the inner knob with the pliers.

SOURCE: I cannot loosen stop motion

Sometimes the knob locks so tight it requires a good strong beefy man to loosen it. Turn it counter clockwise!! You can also wind without loosening the knob, just MAKE SURE to unthread the machine and to sew for winding only. It works for all industrial machines, without loosening the knob.

Why won't the motion stop knob will not move?

Look carefully for thread caught around and under the knob. If you can't get it to turn and find no reason why it won't, you can probably delay fixing it until the next time it's due for its yearly "tuneup" (COA, clean/oil/lubricate) by taking the needle out before you wind a bobbin.

Stop motion knob will not disengage the needle when winding a bobbin

Hi,
The stop motion knob on most older sewing machines is very much the same. You should find a small screw on the face of the knob. Loosen this but don't take it all the way out, it is real easy to lose and hard to find a replacement. Loosen it until you can turn the knob counterclockwise past the stop. Now remove the knob and there will be funny shaped washer underneath. Pay attention to how it goes on, you will have to put it back the same way.
Now to the "why" of your problem. The assembly has run dry, no oil, and the hand wheel should turn freely on the center shaft. You may be able to get some oil in with no problem or you may have to remove the motor belt to remove the hand wheel.
I find this a lot on old machines, nothing broken, just no oil.
Good luck,
Bob

What are you calling a stop motion knob? Are you trying to stop the needle from moving while winding a bobbin?

I turned the stop motion knob in order to wind a bobbin and the knob fell off! I have tried to put in back together but now only the knob will move not the balance wheel. As as result the clutch will not...

There should be a washer that fits over the balance wheel, if you dont put that back on the machine wont work.
Check around and see if it fell off when you removed the knob, or check to see if it is stuck inside the knob.

The washer is about 1" in diameter with a couple little tabs on it.
It will only work when installed correctly so if at first you fail just turn the ****** over!

Brother sewing machine

I have only a cheap one (VX-1100), but when this is happening on mine, the stop-motion knob isn't fully engaged with the balance wheel. They are held together by one being tightened to the other for sewing, loosened for bobbin winding. Michael
