Question about Acer Aspire 1640Z Notebook

1 Answer

Burning I have an Acer Aspire 1640Z. CD burning is fine but when a blank DVD disk is put into the drive it isnt recognised as blank, (says 0 bytes for free and used space). I cant seem to work out why. The side of the drive says 'DVD+Rewritable' so unless i am missing something i assume it can burn to DVDs?

We have put +R disks in. We've also got -R and -RW and none of them are recognised. Could it be it will only take +RW disks?

Yeah, I can play DVDs just fine. It just wont recognise blank ones to write on.

Well we have Roxio on the main computer. Its a very old version though, I got it years ago when i got my first CD writer. I installed Roxio today on my laptop to see if would help but it hasnt done anything. Before that there was nothing on the laptop, i just used windows media player for music.
    Downloading nero now i think

It maybe because the drive is a +R burner and you are putting a -R disc in. That is the usual case. The media type can be found on the inner circle of the disc.

Hope that helps.

Have a look in device manager under the CD/DVD drives and it should have a model number listed. If you put that into Google or whatever search engine you prefer, it should come up with a page to show the drives specs.

No it won't tell you a lot, but if that is your drive, then it is a DVD +/-RW drive and should be able to burn any discs.

There are only 2 real things it can be, it dosn't like the kind of discs you are using or the laser is shot.

I would go for option 1 first. A lot of DVD burners are fussy about the type of discs they will burn.

When it comes to blank DVD's its actually worth paying out a few extra $$ to get good quality ones. The cheaper discs I have seen get holes eaten through the dye layer..not much good like that.

Let me know how you go with the other discs =)

Download a copy of the latest version of Nero.

It's quite large, so you may instead opt to goto your local newsagent and grab a PC magazine.

Most of the good magazines will have a disc with demo software on them. Just check the dvd's contents to see if Nero is among them.

If your not sure about what is a good magazine then ask the agent. They will be only too happy to help.

When you install Nero, it will correct any system errors (missing corrupted files) that could be causing the problem from what is clear now to be a software problem rather then hardware.

Just one question though, do you have any burning software installed on the laptop that is also installed on the desktop, like incd, toast etc?

Yes it is an awsome program. I like many have been using it since it came out years ago.

Don't forget before you delete the installer file to copy it over to your other PC and save yourself another download =)

Purchase a new (or used) disk-drive that is compatible with your Acer notebook.
Remove the current disk-drive, and set it aside.
Connect this "alternate" disk-drive, and install Windows onto it.
Then, test the CD/DVD drive -- if it still gives problems, then you have a "hardware" problem with the CD/DVD drive, and trying to make any "configuration" changes within Windows will have *NO* effect.

Each CD burning program assigns the burning device by the Windows name.
Your system comes with a DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive.
So the CD burning software will burn CDs to the DVD drive.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop with a Matshita cd/dvd r/rw combo (uj-850s), and it performs all funtions except read a virgin dvd. And I also cant seem to find firmware update for it anywhere on earth....

What operating system are you using? Xp? Vista? Which version of XP/Vista? Home, Pro, etc.?

Blank disks cannot be read for the simple reason that there is nothing on them to read.

If you wish to burn a disk, you need burning software, such as Nero which is a professional burning system, but also a free program such as AmoK / Ultimate CD/DVD Burner / or Sun CD/DVD burner (make sure to uncheck the ads box during install to prevent ad displays)

The above have different capabilities, but what you need is a piece of burning software in order to write to a blank disk, so depending on what you need to burn, you may choose from above, seek out other software, or purchase a burning system such as Nero.

My dvd burner doesn't burn dvds

You need to check that with blank DVD's you are using compatible with your drive.Because the DVD's may work with your extranal drive but not with your builting drive. If this doen't slove the problem I would recommend using a different burning software other than "sonic record now" and "vista o/s Built-in dvd burner".

Cd/dvd drive problem

Try with another brand of disk; the Matsushita UJ870 drive of our 5315 burn my Sony CD's but not my Philips CD's (my Compaq V2617LA with an older Matsushita UJ840 drive has burned Phillips CD's in the last two monts)... Remember: CD and DVD lassers are different. I think because of that, i haven't see problems with Sony, Philips and Samsung DVD's... only with CD's...

Cd dvd writer not working

Try to reload the operating system using disk/Alt+F10 first and try to burn again.
If this is still not working. it probably your dvd rom is bad.
