SOURCE: RCA 52 inch tv will not come on and has no sound

I have the same set (D52W19B w/ TC222 chassis) with same symptoms. The set turned on a few times but I heard a sizzle. So I took off the back panel and tried to turn it on again. I heard the tube power up and then saw what was sizzling: an arc under the board about an inch behind the flyback kind of near the big metal heatsink. Any ideas? The tv was given to us so I'm not afraid to tinker with it.

SOURCE: T.V. won't turn on

This is a classic symptom of high voltage shutdown. There is probably a bad flyback [high voltage transformer]. The problem is one for the techs. Replacement usually involves also replacing several H/V components as well. The TV tries to come on, energizing the H/V circuits, then, the protection circuit detects too much current and goes into "protective shutdown" and then tries again. After a few tries, it stops trying. The protective circuit us there to keep from blowing breaker or causing a fire.

If it's an expensive set, take it in to the shop, otherwise go shopping for a new one. This repair can run anywhere from $100 - 400.

Since the problem is intermittent, start checking from the lamp cage door lock. A defective lamp cage lock can result in similar problems.

The same problem is commonly given by a defective lamp. There is no way of testing a DLP lamp, then the lamp gets usually replaced before repairing the rest. If the lamp has many hours of use, replace the lamp first, then work on the rest.

If the lamp is OK, then it is either a bad PSU or a defective ballast. The PSU supplies power in different voltages. Each line is independently used for a different function. If the PSU is defective there can be intermittent power to the lamp while the rest of the TV functions are working. Power to the lamp goes through the ballast. The ballast is the board that supplies power to the lamp. With both PSU and Ballast problem you may have video going off, or TV going to forced standby with LED blinking with no additional problem (no sound or picture issues before going off).

Ballast and PSU are tested reading voltages. If both parts test OK, then the problem is the digital controller board. In that case the protection circuit it is likely faulty.

The tv is faulty and the fact that it failed immediately after you have started it for the first time is a clear indication of a manufacturing defect.
Take the tv back to the seller and ask for a replacement one or your money back.

Dynex 32" tv picture goes black

If there is still about ? 24. Volts coming from the Power Board when it goes dark, it will be the Inverter board that needs replacing. If not, it is the Power Board that needs replacing. The Voltages should be written next to the sockets & plugs on the Power Board.
