Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

MY Whirlpool washer LSQ9010PW3 is not spinning. It wasn't draining so I replaced the lid switch. It drains now, but it doesn't spin. What should I look at next? Should I just call a service man?

Hi,

It could be one of a couple things that are causing it to not spin. Start the washer on a small load and let it fill once it is done filling look inside and see if the agitator is moving. It may sound like it is running but check to see. If it is not moving and you do not have spin then the problem is the drive coupling. The drive coupling is used on this machine, this coupling can break or wear. I have a link to some instructions below on how to replace the coupling if you want to take a look.

If the agitator is working and the spin does not work try setting the timer to spin let it run for a minute then open the lid for a few seconds and close it again, if it starts to spin then the problem is in the timer.

If this does not work you could have an article of clothing stuck between the basket and tub. To check this you would need to take the cabinet off and look around the tub, you can sometimes feel a drag if you try and spin the basket by hand.

If all these are okay the issue is internal to the clutch or transmission and that would need a service professional.

Washer will not spin r drain model whirlpool la7680xmwo

Sounds most likely a broken/defective lid switch. The lid switch on a top-load washer is a safety switch that detects whether the top-load washer lid is closed. The lid must be closed when the basket spins; some top-load models require that the washer lid be closed before the washer drive motor runs (thus no draining). If the lid switch isn't properly detecting whether the lid is closed replace the switch.

Lid is not locking properly, washer sensor is overfilling, and the washer wont spin

Check door switch: If the lid switch is bad it will not drain or spin. Try this test: With lid open let it finish wash cycle. Press lid switch down with screwdriver. Washer should begin draining. Release switch. Motor should stop. Press switch a second time. Washer should start spinning as it continues to drain. If motor doesn't come on while lid switch is pressed, replace the switch. OR

My Whirlpool washing machine will not spin or agitate. The water drains out but does not always spin. If you turn the tank it tightens up and then spins properly.

My kenmore washer 80 series model 110.23832100 won't spin. I think that is the switch lid. How can i replace it

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.23832100

The Kenmore / Whirlpool top load uses a reversing motor to initiate the pump for draining and the transmission to spin.

If you cannot hear the motor trying to turn the pump, (but the washer will agitate) the problem points to the Timer, or the Lid Switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

Following is an illustrated guide for how to access the console.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=5f1af8349a77f9dc5632b02160e0d6c6

This is the Whirlpool PDF on installation and maintenance of direct drive washers. See the section on how to bypass the lid switch and on the transmission.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

If the washer will drain but not spin the problem points to the Neutral Drain Assembly in the transmission.

The Whirlpool PDF has a very good explanation of how the assembly works.

Ours had the same problem, no draining or spinning unless the washer was stopped and restarted.

We replaced the neutral Drain Assembly for about $15 vs. $170 for a transmission.

If the Lid Switch is OK, please re-post a request for how to replace the neutral assembly.

Washer will work on rinse, then stops, won't drain or spin.

most likely the lid switch is faulty .there is a tab on the washer lid that lines up with the lid switch make sure it is lined up and switch is depressed . should hear a click ,if not replace switch.

Won't spin, won't drain

Hi...

If your washer does not drain, you need to check this:

  • Inspect the drain hose for kinks
  • Test the timer control
  • Test the lid switch (some models)
  • Inspect the water pump
  • Inspect the drive belt (belt drive only)
  • Inspect the motor coupler
If it does not spin check also this:

  • Test the lid switch
  • Test the timer control
  • Test the centrifugal switch
  • Test the water level switch
  • Inspect the motor coupler
  • Inspect the drive belt (belt drive only)
  • Inspect under the washer for soot (clutch)
  • Test the motor
  • Inspect the pulley
  • Test the transmission

Good luck !!!
