Casablanca stealth fan light scrapes against blade surround

Casablanca Stealth fan light assembly has started scraping against rotating circular blade mount during operation. Problem and fix? I don't want to do any major disassembly to correct -- would rather call a repair facility.

I want to thank those who posted this solution to fixing this fan. Mine is a Bel Air (two of them) but they had exactly the same issue as the Stealth - scraping fan hosing against light fixture. Casablanca was no help whatsoever. They made a big deal about needing to send a new light fixture adapter and wouldn't budge or barely even talk to me without a serial number. Well those are much more difficult to locate than Casablanca claims.

I did exactly as prescribed here and both now work perfectly silently! The adapter was a joke ... all that was needed was this solution.

I had same problem with a Casablanca Stealth fan purchased 10 years ago. As suggested by mrfanman2u, I removed the light plate (3 screws) and an additional metal plate (3 screws) with a phillips screwdriver. The flywheel was now exposed. I then loosened the Allen set screw on the flywheel with an Allen wrench and pushed the flywheel further up on the motor shaft. After tightening the Allen set screw and reinstalling the 2 plates the problem was fixed!

Thanks mrfanman2u.

There are two probable causes. One, the light housing has been pushed/bent up into the rotating assembly, which is possible if the fan were ever removed from the ceiling and sat on the glass.

If it has never been removed however, the most likely cause is that the Allen Set screw on the flywheel has loosened allowing the flywheel to slip down the motor shaft. It's a purely mechanical problem and if memory serves, to get to the flywheel, you remove the light pan and it's right there. Find the set screw, loosen it enough so that the flywheel is easy to move up and down and raise it up a bit and then cinch it down tight. It's a fairly common problem and for the life of me I cannot understand why Casablanca would not use loctite on that set screw. I mean you pay $500+ for a fan, it should outlast you, right?

I have heard tales that this scraping problem is the result of a design flaw inherent in the fan. Various service people have alleged that the fan blades are actually too heavy for the design of the fan, and consequently “fall out of level” on a consistent basis. This condition then stretches the flywheel spokes so that it no longer rotates properly –- and it is this out-of-round flywheel that causes the scraping. That’s a layman’s description. If that is the problem, the flywheel must be replaced (adding a daub of cyanoacrylate glue to the setscrew as described by mrfanman2U probably wouldn’t be a bad idea, either, although I’m an epoxy man myself!

If you have to replace the flywheel out-of-warranty, the part itself costs about $15.00, plus applicable taxes and/or S

I searched numerous sites (including Casablanca which was no help whatsoever!) before finding this description of the problem and the easy to understand solution. I was ready to dismantle my entire fan... but was able to avoid it when I finally read this and looked closely enough to see the set screw that I''d missed before. Loosened it and pried the flywheel up just a fraction with a couple of screw drivers. Then tightened and ... voila! It's perfect. Thanks so much for the common sense answer! And I'm just a silly girl.

Thank you!!! Tanny! Girl, you rock! Perfect instructions. THE key was to use the screwdriver to push the flywheel up. Solved my noise issue. So, as mentioned above - "Loosened it and pried the flywheel up just a fraction with a couple of screwdrivers. Then tightened and ... voila! It's perfect."

Brian, Thank you. Problem (flywheel moved out of alignment) solved in under 30 minutes (if you subtract all the time/effort trying to get answer from Casablanca and other repair sites!). Was fearful of it being an all day project with no success guaranteed for the effort. Now can watch football playoffs worry-free. Thanks again.

Replace the bulb. If you are going crazy while getting a new bulb turn off the breaker for the room. A serious design flaw, I would complain to Casablanca if you have the time.
