Question about Dell OptiPlex GX260 PC Desktop

Wireless card? I am trying to install a Wireless-G PCI adapter into my CPU (tower). The directions that came with the adapter told me to install the software first, then the adapter, so I did. It worked when the router was 3 feet away. Then I took the computer into a further room in my house and it didn't work anymore. I brought it back, near the router, and now it doesn't work there, either!???? I am totally frustrated. Could I have an incompatible wireless card? It says Windows XP on the box; 802.11G PCI Wireless. Help!

See the link below for product specifications. The simple way to go is an external usb adapter for wireless, since your motherboard only has one PCI slot and it likely has a 56K modem installed in it. Remember to put the driver disk which comes with your adapter in the CDROM/DVD drive BEFORE you plug in the usb adapter , and follow the installation directions carefully - unrecognized usb devices can be difficult to remove...

How do i enable wireless internet on a 2 year old HP desktop

You have to have a wireless card installed on the desktop. Either a PCI wireless card that will be installed inside the computer on one of the pci slots or you can use a usb wireless card that plugs into the usb port.

Unlike laptops, there will be no switch to turn on or off. The wireless on desktops is controlled by the software program that comes with the wireless adapter.

Try Tiger Direct at:

http://www.tigerdirect.com

When the site comes up just type: PCI Wireless Adapter or USB Wireless Adapter in the white search box at the top of the page and click GO.

I am currently using a wireless 'dongle' to connect to the internet but I feel that it would probably give me a more stable connection if I had a wireless card. Can anyone give me details of

Hi Lynda,
The best option for you would be to purchase a wireless PCI network card.
They are relatively inexpensive and should have a stronger signal over a longer distance than a wireless USB dongle.
Below is a typical wireless network card and it should be freely available from your local PC store

I have included a brief explanation for your convenience:

A PCI wireless adapter card connects to a desktop computer's PCI bus. Because the PCI bus is contained inside the computer, the unit must be opened and the wireless network adapter installed inside.
An example of a PCI wireless adapter card, the Linksys WMP54G is shown above. This unit is more than 8 inches (200 mm) long in order to accommodate the standard connection strip required to electrically join to the bus. The unit attaches and fits snugly inside the PCI, although the wireless adapter card antenna protrudes out the back of the computer

Best wishes,
Graemevm

Dell optiplex GX620 desktop has an ethernet port on it, that is not an adapter, I cannot connect to the internet, I downloaded and installed a driver for a wireless ethernet adapter, but that has not...

Okay,..........

1) You can download a wireless Ethernet adapter driver all day, but if you Do Not have a wireless adapter card installed in your computer, the drivers do you no good.

Or if you do not have a wireless USB adapter plugged into a USB port.

Example of a wireless adapter card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4695358&CatId=2692

Example of a wireless USB device,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6367137&CatId=2692

Example of an Ethernet adapter card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=686143&CatId=200

If you are just going to hardwire the computer, just buy an Ethernet adapter card, (PCI version), and install it in your computer, (On the motherboard), in any available white PCI slot.

IF it is the Mini Tower model.

The Desktop, Small Form Factor (SFF), and Ultra Small Form Factor (SFF) computers, are too small in width for a regular size Ethernet adapter card.

They need a Low-Profile Ethernet adapter card,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833114034

This is for a Dell Optiplex GX620 Mini-Tower computer,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx620/en/ug/A02/mtabout0.htm#wp1051997

Scroll the page down until you come to the bold blue heading - System Board Components
This is an illustration of a Top view of the Mini-Tower's motherboard.

16 and 17 point to two PCI slots.
This is where an Ethernet adapter card that is the PCI version, will plug into.

PCI slots are White in color.
An example of a basic PCI slot, ( 3 are shown),

If you do decide to go wireless;

1) Wireless networking operates at half of the speed of wired networking.

A computer that is wired directly to an Ethernet adapter card, is twice as fast on the internet, as a computer that is connected wireless.

2) Make sure your Router is capable of wireless.
Make sure the wireless router has a built-in Modem, or that you have a separate Modem.

[ For DSL.
Phone line connects to Filter. Filter has a place for a telephone cable, and an Ethernet cable.
Ethernet cable connects to Filter, and other end connects to Modem.
Ethernet cable goes from Modem to Wireless router that does not have a built-in Modem.

OR,
Phone line connects to Filter. Ethernet cable from Filter goes directly to wireless router, that has a built-in Modem.

Computer has to have a USB wireless device, or a wireless adapter card, installed.

Please have patience with an elderly computer illiterate person. Am near a wifi tower and am interested in purchasing a eub362ext wireless usb adapter to get on line. My desk top has windows XP. Will this...

Hi spring chicken.
Two ways of going about this, cost about the same, £15 - £20. Your computer needs to talk to wireless tower, this is done by a plug in USB wireless dongle, (small stick, plugs in computer USB port) or by a wireless PCI card that fits inside your desktop in a PCI slot,(white slots on your motherboard,3or 4 of them side by side) Both ways are straight forward plug & play. You say you are near a wifi tower, this is fine as long as you are in what we call a wifi hotspot, where the owner of the tower allows unrestricted access to other users, Library's & the such allow this service. Your dongle or card will let you see if the networks are security encripted (WEP) or open unsecured. A secured network requires a network key to be used, (an 8 or 20 digit number set by the owner)
You can only get free network access in a hotspot.
Or ask the owner of a nearby network if they would be kind enough to allow to use their network, you will need a security code from them.
Hope this helps, do have a nice day.
