Question about GE PDS22MBR Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Food compartment cools ok; bottom freezer doesn't.

After opening the bottom frrezer door the temperature rises to 15-25 and is extremely slow to cool down even if not opened again for 24 hrs or more. All the time the food compartment holds it's temp. The same problem several months ago was repaired ? by a GE recomended technition by putting in a new compressor fan. The frig is aPDS22MBS (not R),about four years old and had the motherboard replaced while on warranty.

The problem when a fridge needs a condensor fan is that it causes the unit to work harder there is a good chance that it cooked the sealed systm also might want to check the condensor for a clogg or dirty condensor.the temp around the unit ideally these are to be used in rooms of 65 to 96 degrees so if in garage can be hard to work well

Have a kenmore refrigerator freezer works but not refrigerator

You mean "How to Fix a Kenmore Refrigerator That Is Not Cold But the Freezer Is Good?"

Well this what i say,
Kenmore combination refrigerator and freezers combine the short- and long-term food storage options in a single unit. There are some occasions when the refrigerator compartment might appear to be malfunctioning while the freezer box stays cool. Ruling out these occasions ensures you have done everything you can to correct the problem before calling for a technician if necessary.

1.Verify that the temperature controls for the refrigerator compartment are properly configured. Tap the "^" or "v" buttons beside the refrigerator's LCD temperature display until "38," the ideal temperature, appears. The compartment could have been set too warm. Allow 24 hours for the the appliance to reach 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

2 Check that the refrigerator compartment door closes completely, objects inside the appliance could be holding the door ajar. When cool air is allowed to escape, the internal temperature rises. Cracked, holed or corroded door seals may also raise the refrigerator temperature.

3 Change how you use the refrigerator compartment; storing hot or warm food strains the appliance and causes a rise in internal temperatures. Do not prop open the door or leave it ajar for more than a few seconds at a time for the reasons outlined in Step 2.

4 Contact Kenmore if the refrigerator compartment remains too warm for your food. There may be a problem with the motor or any one of the other parts that regulate the temperature

If this was helpfu.l please let me know.

Hello,

It's normal for the center divider to be warm but it should never be so hot it will burn you when touching it. A few things to check are;

The coil on the the bottom of refrig. behind the grill under the doors, check and clean all dust from it using a vacuum and ref. coil brush to clean all dust from it

The condenser fan motor..its behind the rear access plate in the back of the unit, remove back plate and check that fan motor by the compressor is running.

Good luck, GENE

The red light is on my freezer also the green one the door has not been left open can you help

This means the sensor has determined that the temperature is rising. This can happen if the door was left open (which doesn't appear to be the case with your green light) or an unusual amount of warm food was put into it. If this is not the case you may have a cooling problem. If you can put a thermometer in there and check the temperature, working properly the freezer should be around 0 F. If you have trouble please send the model number from the tag on the freezer. That will help with trouble shooting.

I can smell items in my freezer when I open the door of the fridg

Good day,
All cooling in a refrigerator, be it the freezer section, or the fresh food section is performed by the freezer.
The freezer takes care of itself, but also by the function of the fan motor in the freezer, blows a limited amount of the freezer air into the fresh food compartment to cool it to the nominal 37 degrees.

The odor in the freezer is disguised by the extremely cold air, and is not apparent. But that odor when raised to 35 or 40 degrees will become noticeable.
As well, the freezer compartment rises to 30 degrees plus when going thru it's automatic defrost cycle, which occures for approx. 30 minutes once or twice a day, adding to the problem.
Sealing the packages is probably the only real answer.

Working fridge, warm freezer.

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

In your case, the door must be stuck all the way open, allowing all the cold air to be diverted into the fresh food compartment. The compressor cycle is controlled by the thermostat in the fresh food compartment and thus 'short cycles' because the fresh food compartment acheives normal temperature while the freezer is relativel warm.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck in the extreme open position, for example), the fresh food compartment will get VERY cold while the freezer will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is diverting all the cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel/door/flap itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

The freezer section of my fridge freezer side by side has broken down and will not freeze. The fridge side seems fine. Is it worth getting repaired? Prior to this I often heard like a clicking/ tapping...

So your refrigerator section is cooling fine ? When the compressor motor is running and you open your freezer, is the fan running ? You might need a simple fan replacement - The most costly repairs to a refrigerator is usually the compressor - as long as your compressor is running and you have cooling, the other most common problems are control board faults, evap fans, defrost timers, all of which can be fixed.

Is your freezer iced up when this happened - turning the refrigerator off and unplugging it, try removing the back panel of your freezer and locate the fan - look for anything obstructing the blades - maybe ice or other......otherwise you may need this serviced.

Is it worth it ? It depends - how much did you nitially pay for this ? How long have you had it ? How much are estimated costs for the repair - if the problem is one thing needing replaced and doesn't cost you a lot of money, yes it is worth it.

Refrig not cooling

Either the fan that blows cold air from the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment is burned out or the door/flap that seperates the compartments is stuck or the linkage connecting it to the fresh food temperature dial is stuck or broken.

The evaporator coils are in the freezer compartment and air is blown from the freezer compartment to cool the fresh food compartment. For some reason, air is not moving to fresh food compartment.

If the fan is running, it could be something as simple as Ice blocking to door between the freezer and fresh food compartment. I know modern refrigerators are self-defrosting, but that's only the evaporator coils, which are defrosted by a timer and a heater.

Ice can form on passageways inside the refrigerator, like the exit of the ice maker and in this case, on the door and 'tunnel' between the freezer and fresh food compartment. It's free, and doesn't take a lot of time, so try completely defrosting the unit before doing anything else.

BE SURE to keep the doors open, as odors can form as particles of food are allowed to defrost that may have been frozen in an ice pack for months or even years. Clean the interior of the refrigerator while you have everything out and reset the controls to normal settings.

If this doesn't help, there may be a mechanical problem with the air transfer control flap/door that will need to be fixed.

Hope this helps.

Hello, I have a PDS22MBRAWW GE Profile (bottom freezer) fridge that is apparently having repetitive defrost problems. This is a 7 years old fridge. Last January, the freezer started getting too cold and the fridge too warm. Opening up the freezer compartment revealed a frozen evaporator. Manually defrosting (using a blower on the evaporator) allowed the fridge to cool normally a couple of days until the tech came in. A bad board was diagnosed and the main board was changed for a new replacement model (WR55X10942). The fridge then worked fine for a couple of months until early May. The evaporator was frozen again. Repeated manual defrosts allowed the fridge to run normally between 1 to 2 weeks before another defrost was required. The tech came back early June and changed the main board again (on warranty) as both the defrost heater and I guess thermodisc were diagnosed to be still fine. Two weeks after running with this 2nd new board, the evaporator was frozen again. So I figure either the problem is something else than the board, that some other bad piece has the board burn up, or that the 2nd new board was broken from the start. How can I diagnose the thermodisc and defrost heater myself? Is there any other piece on this model that should be looked at? A thermistor is part of the evaporator assembly. What is its role and how can I diagnose it? Is there a way to know when the fridge should be defrosting in order to check if the element gets warm then? Do you have any other idea about how to diagnose the problem and fix the fridge for good? Thanks! Martin
