Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Fuse inside the microwave blows off when there is something wrong with a part inside the microwave. To start with check the door switch as if that is stuck or faulty it will blow the fuse again. Another thing that can cause this is a bad fuse holder as if that is not holding the fuse tight enough the fuse will blow again. If everything else seems to be fine then it is the high voltage capacitor which is located behind the fan underneath the high voltage transformer has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

    Hi,

I measured the resistance in the noise filter. Results:
    L1-L2 < 1ohm
    N1-N2 < 1ohm
    L1 or L2 - N1 or N2 = 0ohms

I'm thinking I need a new filter but I also was unable to measure any resistance on the sensor (Blk to Red, Red to WH, etc..)?

what shall I try next? I've read the TCO could be to blame but not sure how to test it?

If you have already checked the filter then yes it should be replaced however, as I said earlier please check the high voltage capacitor which is located behind the fan underneath the high voltage transformer before replacing anything else. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

using a meter, 9V battery, and jump wires to the H.V. Capacitor and measuring from terminal to terminal I got 0V (when I should get 9V).. I guess I've got a dead H.V. Capacitor. Any other quick way to check it to make sure? Thanks!

Yeah...thats what I thought, you have already checked how it should be checked now its time to replace it. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

do you think the noise filter is also bad? what are the chances of both being bad?

Chances are good, and as you have already tested both of them then it seems replacing both is always better.

After pressing start, light goes on but not operating. Senor issue?

I had a similar problem once with an older Kenmore microwave, which at the time, were actually made by LG. After removing the cabinet, there was a small automotive type fuse in a clip-in fuse holder which proved to be "open" after checking it for continuity with a test meter. I replaced the fuse with the EXACT type and rating, and continued to use the oven for several more years until I gave it away. Please note, that microwave ovens are not something that you want to mess around with. Make absolutely certain that you have unplugged it before doing anything. In my case, I suspect the after several years of trouble-free use, the fuse had failed, -likely due to age. In your case, it may be a similar issue, so you might want to see if your microwave oven has a similar replaceable fuse. Beyond that, I would strongly suggest taking it to an approved service facility. Also, NEVER operate the microwave until you have replaced all covers, cabinet, etc. to it's original state.

Hi,
As in your case the fuse keeps on blowing, thereare couple fo things that you will have to do fix it:
The problem your describing is most likely a cap problem. The transformers operate in saturation and therefore it's not likely to blow out the diode. The transformer is essentially energy limiting.
The capacitor or diode may be bad. Discharge the capacitor as described earlier in the article. Test the capacitor by removing the leads and setting the VOM to RX100. Probe the terminals. The reading should start in the low ohms and increase toward infinity. Reverse the probes and re-test. The reading should do the same thing. If not, it's bad. To test the diode, disconnect the diode from both the appliance and the capacitor. With the VOM set to RX100, probe the wires. Then reverse the probes and read again. You should get infinity for one reading and low ohms for the other reading. If not, replace. Another cause could be a faulty magnetron, but due to the sensitivity of that piece, it's best left to a professional.

Kenmore Elite worked fine for months, then went dead. No screen, no power, nothing. Cord is plugged in, fuse is fine, circuit breaker is fine also. Any ideas?

This will require trouble shooting with power present and a qualified individual should do this. Verify power at the plug and trace to the board. It could be a bad wire, loose connection, open cavity thermostat, or a failed board assuming power is available and the fuse is good.

Owners manual for Kenmore Elite Microwave Model 66462

A full Sears/Kenmore model number has 3 digits, a dot, then 8 more digits, such as ###.########

You can just enter your full model number at the Sears parts site.

On the resulting page, look to the right for the blue "View manuals" button. Click there.

That Sears-related site has many free manuals. While the manuals they list there are all free, they will ask you to register.

Many times, the owner's manual will have the installation instructions inside.

If yours is not listed there for free, you would have to order it through the
Sears parts site.

I would call Sears service (and ask for the manager) every day until they send the guy back with the right parts!

If that somehow doesn't work, you can order the parts at the Sears parts site.

You can find out which parts you need in the owner's / installation manual. If you don't have it,
you can just enter your full model number at the Sears parts site.

On the resulting page, look to the right for the blue "View manuals" button. Click there.

Same thing happened to us. We just came back from Sears, where we bought another. Just for giggles, my wife suggested unplugging the old one and plugging it back in again. It works now. New one's going back to the store.

Microwave oven - how to replace fuse

You can usually find an exploded view by entering your FULL model number (721.66319500) here.

But there's usually a reason the fuse blows!

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor too.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer too.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Please write back with more details if you need further help.

Kenmore elite microwave

Does the digital display light up at all? Is it completely dead? Are you sure it has power? Have you tried another outlet? If the outlet is good and the unit is completely dead, the internal fuse may have blown. You can try to take the cover off (with the unit unplugged) and look for a blown fuse. Try replacing the fuse with an EXACT fuse of the same rating. Try plugging the unit back in again and see if the unit comes back on. If not, you may have a power supply issue or defective Magnetron.

Please let me know what you find and we'll go from there.

Good Luck,
- Jim
