The hard drive or some other critical component may be failing, or just the OS or hard drive corrupted. If you have files that you do not want to lose, you could try this... Pull the hard drive out, and use a "USB Hard Drive Adapter" (available fairly cheap online) to connect the hard drive to a friend's computer, and save all the personal files (documents, pictures, etc.) you can to a folder on the friend's computer or an external hard drive. That way, at least you may not lose your files.
Then, you could try to do a Factory Restore or Reload on the computer, and if that works, copy your personal files back to your newly restored computer.
Good luck.

You can download the US basemap for the 500 at http://www.megaupload.com/it/?d=EJTNQH03 Rename it BASEMAP.MGI Then copy it in the directory "background maps" in the SD card of your 500, by using a SD card reader/writer. Insert
the SD card in your 500 and connect it to your PC; then turn it on;it
will turn on regularly, because the basemap in the card will be
detected; turn it to USB file transfer mode, and copy the basemap from
the SD card to the directory "background maps" of the 500. If you already have the file ..just rename it like I said ..and copy it ..using the sd card in the reader...Than if it is not functional ..just reset it ..and reload the file the proper way by reloading maps..
Check your hosts file. To do this, press start-->Run and type in %systemroot%System32driversetc
A window with files will be brought up. In there, there is a hosts file. Right-click on the file and run with notepad. Search for yahoo.com. You can do a ctrl-f. If it is there, highlight the entire file, open notepad as an administrator. right-click on notepad and click run as administrator. Paste what you just copied into this new notepad file and save in the same directory that your original hosts file is located.
This a step by step instruction. Do not, I repeat do not edit anything else or lose any information when you copy and paste or you will lose startup of some of your other services.
If this does not work, run a virus scan. You can download avg for free at www.avg.com
Sounds like you have a failing enclosure, are you still under warranty?
If you're under warranty and have other copies of all your files, simply visit the western digital website and file a warranty claim. They are very good about replacing any drives that fail.
If you do have files you'll need recovered then you do have a cheap solution to try before commiting to more expensive solutions. It will void your warranty but frankly the warranty is useless if you need your files.
Take your drive to a PC shop and ask the technicians to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. If you're lucky it's just a failure in the enclosure and you should be back in business for less than $50. If this fails to work and you're located in North or South America contact www.armor-it.com if you live outside the Americas, contact me by replying to this page and I will direct you to an apropriate facility nearer to you.
I see that you have a loss partition of your External HD. It is totally damage partition. Here's what you do Replug your External HD to another PC if it is OK. Maybe its not the same will appear on your PC too. Unknown Partition are likely big trouble to us if we have needed files inside. Partition on every HD, External or USB are very needed, if you lose it. Then again reformat that to use again. Hope its not gone. Good luck!
