Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

1 Answer

Wont start My lt2000 is a couple of years old at least 5. it has the fuel tank under the seat anyways, my problem is that when i try to start it it turns to the compression then stops, i have to keep bumping the key at the right time to get it to turn all the way over, it has gotten progressively worse. went it first started to happen it only took a couple of times and it would start, now i can't get past the compression of the motor unless i do it by hand. when i take out the spark plug i can crank it over real easy. i think it is a 18.5 briggs. can you adjust the valves on these? it is overhead valves. Thanks adam

It sounds like the cylinder is filling up with gas, does it still do it after you take the plug out and crank it and put the plug back in and does it have any gas come out of the cylinder when you crank it?

Need to see a video on installing in tank fuel pump

Youtube must have thousands of them, well hundreds anyway. Well, a whole lot anyway. One probably like or similar to your '89 model.

Pretty sure you have to drop the tank to replace pump. In later years, makers began putting access panels under the rear seat or trunk area to access the fuel pump assembly, without removing the gas tank.

I bet it's the gas. After some time the gas will no longer be volatile enough to start the car. Try draining all the fuel and putting in some fresh gas. Remember, when you try to start it again you'll need to get the new gas through the pump and lines before it will start. Also, check the condition of the injectors. Old gas can start to break down and build up a film that could be on your injectors (or clog your fuel filter- better check that too). Hope this helps.

We ran ut of gas, then it ran for a couple days ut then it started to rain and rained for 3-4 days straight. my van wouldn't start.

If it is a minivan there is a connector under the floor on the drivers side behind drivers seat under van.(by front of sliding door) Could have water in it. Or your fuel pump could have gone bad.
If you have a rubber mallet I would try tapping on the middle of the fuel tank while someone is trying
to start it. Do you hear the fuel pump run for 3 second when the key is first turned on? If not hit the tank with the mallet. What van model and year and what engine is it?

My r6 has been sitting for a few years. i left fuel in the tank, so i charged my battery and tried to start it up but it wont start. after getting old fuel out and new fuel, still wont start. any...

The carby's should be drained and flushed with an aerosol carburetor cleaner, available all auto/bike shops. The fuel tank should receive the same treatment, but a couple of cupfulls of fuel swished around and drained should be ok. Give the plugs a clean and thoroughly check all wiring connections for signs of corrosion. Take one plug lead off and turn motor over with a spare plug attached and check each cylinder for spark. Check all rubber components for persihing or cracking. Goodluck and cheers.

Wont start been sitting for a year turns over but wont fire cant find how to get seat off or where to drain old gas

you have to use the key and the leaver in just back from the key side then take out the bolt that holds the tank down 12 mm you have 2 hoses going to the carbs one is a vacume line the other is fuel remove from thank then slide tank back and you should be able to drain the gas out of the tank but if you huck up a fuel line to the pitcook and drain the fuel into a pail you wont have to remove the tank pull the spark plugs and put fuel in and trie to start it again you may have to do this a couple of time to prime the carbs

How long does petrol stay good for, got spark and fuel but wont start, has not started the bike for possibly a year? wont bump neither,

Modern lead free fuel can start to go off after 3 months. Drain the old stuff from carbs and tank and try a couple of litres of new fuel.
