Question about Dryers
It sounds like the sensor is not working right. If you have the same type of load (all towels) you should get a very even full dry on auto dry.
If your filter is on the top of the dryer the sensor is on the back wall near the bottom right, if your filter is just inside the door the sensor is on the front wall just below the door opening.
The sensor is a set of 2 metal bars each about the size of a pencil in a black plastic housing. As the wet clothes brush across these, the dryer stays in the drying mode, as the clothes get dryer the bars do not make electrical contact with each other as the dry clothes do not conduct current like wet clothes.
Saying that, there are a couple things that could cause it not to dry. If the dryer is not level and the clothes (towels) are settling to the opposite side of the dryer that the sensor they will not dry right. Level the dryer by adjusting the 4 legs.
If the sensor bars get a coating of softener they will not sense right. Take a cloth and alcohol and clean the metal strips so they can sense again.
Doing these to adjustments along with a clean filter and vent will make your towels dry again
