I have seen a large number of HP DV series laptops come through our service bay in the last year or so. There has been a larger than normal failure rate on these machines. This is such an issue with HP that they extended the original warranty by 12 months. I would suggest you go to the website below and check to see if your machine is one of the units under their Extended Service Plan.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1842189&lang=en

I have had very good luck talking with HP support about this issue. If it is under their warranty, they require you to ship the laptop to them for service. They pay for shipping both ways. *Backup data before you send it away*.

If, however, this machine is not under their extended warranty, I suggest you start by removing all peripherals. This includes optical drive, hard drive and RAM. Install one stick of known working RAM and try to power up system. If you get a post then there is an issue with the stick of RAM. If you get no post, try the same RAM stick in the other memory bank. If you do not get a POST then most likey there is an issue with the motherboard. At that point you look online for the cost of a replacement motherboard. It might be in your best interest to replace the laptop at that point as the cost of the motherboard and labour to replace it usually exceeds the value of the laptop.

Hope this helps

If the display works fine when connected to external screen via VGA connector then then the problem is either with the LCD display panel ( which consists of the display panel and inverter ) or the LCD cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. You could try to re-seat the cable connection on the back of the LCD panel.

My screen on my laptop went black.

Theres is a lot of reason associating to a black screen. First lets just assume it the screen and not the laptop. Check to see if you still see any image in the screen, you might want to do this in a lighted area. If you do, but is very dark, then your backlit light is dead and your screen needs replacement. If you don't see anything, then use a external monitor such as a computer monitor, a Tv and connect via VGA port, or HDMI if you have one or a svideo to an external souce and see if you get picture, If you do, then your Inverter is bad, or either a loose connection wiring somewhere between your comuter base and your screen. ( Because laptop tend to open and close alot) If you don't get anything via external source through your VGA, HDMi or s-vdeo, then this is something involved with your laptop. Could be from cpu, chipset, ram, or simply the motherboard itself.

The motherboard was not the issue given what you describe. I'm a bit puzzled as to why you replaced the motherboard, when, as you say, it works on an external. The issue here is with the inverter or backlight, mable the VGA cable although unlikely. I suggest replacing the screen in this case

Black screen on acer laptop

Black screen is a number of things.
*If you`re laptop turns on but you see no display at all..does`nt even post,Then its the GPU on you`re motherboard thats faulty & will need replacing. Or
*Its you`re screen inverter which is a small circuit board located inside on the bottom of you`re LCD screen which needs replacing.Theyre cheap and not expensive.
*Do a test for example : Connect you`re laptop to a PC monitor Via VGA to VGA cable.Connect to youre laptops PC input to your monitor PC input,Then turn you`re laptop on.If it displays on you`re monitor then its the problem with your LCD laptop screen,Or the inverter needs replacing.
If theres no display on the pc monitor then its You`re motherboard onboard GPU (graphic Card) - Which you will need to replace the motherboard.

I have a VGA to RCA Component RGB Cable - 1.8M - M/M and i want to connect it to my tv so my laptop can diplay through my tv

It will not work. This cable is meant for connecting a device with RGB outputs (Blu-ray, DVD players, etc...) to a display with VGA input (such as computer monitors).

Using a VGA cable to the 'PC in' VGA on the back of the TV, this has worked fine for multiple screens, but now there is colour distortion when watching movies via the laptop on the TV screen, help?

Can you describe the "distortion" that you refer to? Also, were there any changes to the laptop when this occurred or did this just suddenly appear?

Thanks,
Dan
