Isolate it first. there are 3 steps: step 1: isolate the monitor. use other monitor. if still no display, step 2: replace video card. if still no display, step 3: replace memory module.

Does it state "No Signal" on the monitor?

Do you have another computer to try the monitor on?

Works?

Then try the monitor cable.

Works?
Then your computer is not working.

If this is a problem related to the eMachines C6535 desktop computer, it doesn't come with a graphics (Video) card. It comes with Integrated Graphics.

http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=C%20Series&model=C6535

(Nvidia GeForce 6100 GPU soldered to the motherboard.
GPU - Graphics Processing Unit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU )

There is no graphics card to replace.

The way to test is to install a graphics card in the open, available PCI Express x16 slot on the motherboard, and plug the monitor into it.

But BEFORE you approach the graphics, read on.

As previously suggested, you may try taking the Ram Memory modules out, and reinstalling them.
(Comes with two - 256MB PC3200 ram memory modules)

I would also suggest you clean the gold plated contacts on the bottom of the ram memory modules with a pencil eraser before reinstalling them.

(Be sure to remove the eraser dust with air. Use a can of compressed air for computers, or air pressure from your mouth may be sufficient)

More than likely the problem is the Power Supply.
Weak Voltage power rail.
A LARGE percentage of computer failure is due to a bad Power Supply.

1) eMachines uses low quality power supply's. eMachines are a budget computer.

2) Most computers are dirty inside, as well as the Power Supply.
This causes Power Supply failure.

Test the voltages on the Power Supply, or install a KNOWN to be good, Compatible power supply for a test unit.

How do I adjust the image width on this wide screen? Everything appears distorted and wider than it is. I would like a narrower image.

This is one of the problems with the wide aspect screen. Most images seem to fit best on the older monitors.
You can go into the video properties and choose one the the display types that best display your image. Unfortunately, by taking a normal (to us) image that looked just fine on an older monitor and displaying it on a newer, wide-aspect monitor, you're gonna distort the image or crop it in a way you didn't expect.
My advice is to experiment with the display until you find something you can live with.
