The D600 line was introduced in 2004. The only accurate way to find the exact age of your laptop, or the PRODUCTION DATE is to contact Dell. Otherwise you would only be able to find out the general date which was the 2004-2005 years. After that they moved on to the D6X0 lines...D630, etc as the processors improved. Some more info on your unit
Latitude D600
The D600 (and simultaneously-introduced D800) was Dell's first business-oriented notebook based on the Pentium-M processor; it used the first-generation "Banias" Pentium M chips running on a 400 MT/s FSB on DDR memory. It had a PATA hard drive and a D-series modular bay, and used an ATI GPU Radeon 9000. It had a 14" screen, in regular (non-widescreen) form factor. Unlike later D6x0 series machines, both memory sockets were accessible from a single cover on the bottom of the system.
Many Latitude models had a near-clone Inspiron, in the case of the D600, it was the Inspiron 600M. Differences include that the 600M does not work with the Dell D-Dock, and the case styling is slightly different. The motherboards, screens and hard drive caddies are all physically interchangeable

When i plug my laptop in to charge it, the computer reads that it is plugged in but does not charge, what can i do?

It depends on how old your laptop is, or more specifically, how old the batteries are. Laptop batters eventually can get to the point where they will not charge properly, especially older technology batteries. You need to have the batteries tested to see if they can hold a charge. Depending on where you live, there might be a battery store that can do this for you easily. Also check to see how much a replacement battery costs (easily done online), then weigh that in with the age of the laptop to determine if you want to replace the battery, or start shopping for new technology.

Hello, Lyn.

On the left side of your laptop, you'll find a wireless on/off switch. See if that switch was turned off.

Hopefully, that will help.

P.S. I didn't grow up in the computer age, either.

I have a compaq laptop that I use as a desktop, battery light came on and now computer doesn't work

Useage does not change the charastics of the computer . It is still a laptop.

I presume your laptop is plugged in to the wall. I presume your power supply is still working. Many times I find I can operate a laptop in this manner until the battery is really dead. In my experience, there has to be some capability in the battery for the power supply to be able to power the computer. You don't mention the model of this computer and you don't mention the age of the battery. If it is more than 3 years old ... you probably need a replacement. The replacement will probably be $100.00 or more. It may not be ecnomical for you to replace the battery.

Check or you can check e-Bay or Craigs list. It might make more sense to grab your data and sell the computer at either of those sites.
