Have used this unit for 3 months trouble free now can't get the unit to comunicate tried all the down loads and the factory disc. Don't know if the connection usb-unit is bad I can hear it ding when pluged in but says the proper plug in is not there
Have you tried another USB cable and/or another USB Port?
The cables are not fault proof and yours may be damaged.
After testing the cable, if you are still unsure of the cable, try the USB cable with another device to see if it will work with the other device. If yes, then it is probably not the cable.
Your comment "I can hear it ding when pluged in but says the proper plug in is not there" suggests a software problem.
Did you Uninstall the driver before trying the downloads and factory disk? Try this but use the factory disk in the first instance as this worked before (you can update later).
Have you gone in to Device Manager to check to see if there are problems with any of your hardware (especially the USB Controllers and the GPS Unit itself. To find Device Manager - RIGHT click on My Computer - select Properties - then click on Device Manager.
Problems show up as a yellow exclamation mark.
If you see any of these - RIGHT click the device - go to Properties - and select Reinstall or Update driver.

Use the Garmin Express program from Garmin. Down load and install the program, then connect your GPS to your PC. The program will identify your GPS and tell you of any available map and software updates.
If you are looking for map upgrades there are a couple
options. One is to purchase the update on DVD then load it to the unit. Two Purchase a Lifetime Subscription to mapping which would allow you to
update the GPS every 3 months. You can also obtain a onetime update VIA
download on Garmin.com. For best prices check www.gpscity.com
Did you let the unit warm to atleast room temperature before you tried to turn it on again? Often when a unit gets really cold the screen will have troubles refreshing. If the unit was at room temperature then it may have water damage, try keeping it in a vat of rice for 2-3 days and then try it again.
Yes, just redo the download. Be sure the unit is hooked up via USB and navigate to the Garmin site. The download and install take a REALLY LONG TIME. It is not grab a download and run. Up to hours...you just have to be patient.
The simple way is to send the unit to Garmin they will load the maps for free.
If you keep trying - try this -
With your thumb in the lower right corner of the screen - pushing in - like there is an X there - [ push with your thumb before you turn it on] Turn it on -
when this screen comes up - push YES -
then try your maps.
If they do not load on your pc [ which must have the unit hooked up and a legit copy of the newest maps ] then send the unit to Garmin. They will load your maps for you FREE.
I can solve this by not solving it. First I tried reset the unit to default settings: hold down the power, page, and enter buttons at the same time, a message, "do you really wan to reset..." will appear. Select "yes." If the unit reboots, hurrah. If not, call tech support (1.800.800.1020). Get an RMA, send it back to them for repair. I had purchased mine over 30 days ago but less than 60: Amazon wouldn't replace it, Garmin will either replace or repair. If you want them to send a new unit while the old is in transit, just ask; they will charge and then credit a card once they have the old unit is in hand. Good luck.
YES YOU NEED A usb MINI CORD 2.0 . iF YOU GO TO ANY STORE WHERE THEY SELL COMPUTERS THEY WILL HAVE IT JUST BRING YOUR GARMIN UNIT SO THEY CAN SEE THE TYPE PLUG YOU NEED. iT ALSO WORKS AS A CHARGER IF IT IS PLUGED INTO YOUR COMPUTER. AFTER YOU HAVE THE CORD JUST PLUG INTO A USB PORT AND GOT TO THE GARMIN SITE. . THERE YOU CAN DOWN LOAD THE CARS FOR FREE iF YOU JUST PURCHASED YOUR GARMIN 200w THEN REGISTER IT THERE AND YOU WILL GET A FREE UP DATE TO THE MAPS . FREE FOR THE FIRST 90 DAYS. AFTER YOU REGISTER. fyi IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DOWN LOAD THE UPDATE. ABOUT 4HR ! THEN ANOTHER 1.5 HRS TO PUT IT INTO THE GARMIN UNIT.
I had a 200 W Nuvi with the same problem. Luckily it happened with the first 3 months, so i could return it to Garmin under warranty for a free replacement
