Tip

Disable Startup programs to increase system speed

One of the great things about our operating systems today is the automated processes that take place in the background. These processes make many programs run faster and make them easier to use. However, this feature can also use resources on programs that you may never use. Some programs use auto updates or even schedulers to regularly check for updates, is this necessary? Not really. I often suggest to people to remove unwanted or unused processes from startup. This can be more difficult than it sounds as there are often many items in the startup that are unknown to most users. I now have a solution to this problem. You can go to http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php this is the largest and most in-depth list of startup items I have ever seen. At first the list will seem very intimidating it is very large. However, once you get started it goes quickly. You can search alphabetically on the site so don't panic. If you run across an entry that is not listed try google and do a search for it. Follow the instructions below to view and disable startup processes. Although it can be time consuming I suggest you check every one of your startup entries and verify if they are in fact necessary. The speed increase is worth the time spent and you may even find hidden malware or viruses you didn't know were there.

Click-Start

In run line or search box (depending on OS) type "msconfig" hit enter.

Microsoft's System Configuration Utility should open.

Select Startup tab

Here you will be able to view and disable\enable startup items. After verifying all startup items you will need to reboot for the changes to take affect. When windows reloads you will get a message that will tell you the startup configuration has been changed and how to change it back. Select the check box in lower left corner "Do not show this message again" to make this go away. If at anytime after you have made changes you have problems with an application simply go back to "Msconfig" and enable the applications startup process. Following these instructions could significantly speed up your system.
Test your hard drive for errors.
It's either F11 or F12 on startup.

120 processes running on dell inspirion laptop

If you're interested in finding out what programs are running what processes, etc. check out this free program that will take you as deep as you want to go. Click here and here
Just don't be so concerned about running processes that you start terminating things randomly, or you'll more likely hose your system than improve performance. If you're interested in improving performance, google performance + your os at windows help & how to (click here) and follow the steps outlined there to reduce startups, clean temp files, defrag, shut down unnecessary services, etc.
Here's another link a great windows support site, with tips on optimizing windows.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Desktop will not start.. will only go through Chkdsk

Try and tap F8 and see if you can boot to safe mode and go to my computer and rt click on C, and pick properties then tools, then
check for errors, and check auto, and scan.

Go to dell.com if you don't know who made the hard drive in your model. Then go to the mfg of the hard drive and download a hard drive diagnostic disk to check your hard drive for bad sectors.

You should go to dell.com and check your warranty and you can also ask dell what you should do.

This link posted below has a lot of drive mfg diagnostic tools.

Error message

That is not an error, Windows is trying to verify that there are no issues with your hard disk. Is what you wrote above all that you see? If so then check disk is freezing before it completes. Try to cancel the chkdsk before it starts by pressing any button when it prompts you to, log into windows, back up everything up that you need and restart your laptop. Worst case scenario you need to reinstall windows on your laptop
