Need to know how to change a blade belt on a mower deck

Jun 03, 2010 - hello the mower deck is off mower when we started. The guy who took it off is gone. New guy thinks he has the 2 rear draft arms on correctly also the 2 front draft rodes are on correctly. Now the information that you sent me is not the same deck no drive cables etc. etc. We have one 8 inch by one inch tight spring left over where does it go? Also how do we tighten the belt? adjustable pulley is loose but bulted tightly. What we need to know is 1. how do we tighten the belt 2. we know deck should not be sitting on ground what do we do? Keep in mind we have no mower engagememnt drive cable or spring locking pin. Basically top of deck has 4 pulleys that feed to drive pulley on mower. We can't engage blades because belt is way to loose, plus can't move mower because deck is sitting on the ground. With deck in the up or down position. Basically we're at at loss. Jun 03, 2010 - again this is for the John Deere STX 38 1988 model with Kohler 12.5 command system. John Deere thinks the ignition module is bad so we replaced it, but can't test it until we run the mower.Jun 03, 2010 - It has a easy mower lift electric engage???? Does this mean deck raises on it's own when we go to cut grass? As you can see we are at a loss.

Step 1 Stop the engine if it is running, and disconnect the spark plug wire. Remove the spark plug with a spark plug tool, and check the condition of the spark plug. Replace it if it is damaged or worn. If it is still in good condition, check the gap with the gapping tool and reinstall it. Step 2 Drain the fuel and the oil, and turn the mower onto its side so the air filter is up. Step 3 Place a block of wood by the bottom end of the mower blade, and hold it there with your foot. Loosen the mower blade bolts with a socket and a ratcheting wrench or a box/open-ended wrench. Step 4 Remove the blade from the drive shaft with a gloved hand or with a cloth rag. The blade may still have raw or sharp edges, so handle the worn blade carefully. Step 5 Mount the new blade where the old blade was mounted and in the same manner. Make sure the curved ends of the blade point towards the mower housing. Hand thread the bolts at first, and tighten the bolts with a wrench after placing the block of wood on the other ther side of the blade. Use a torque wrench to finish tightening the bolts to 15- to 27-foot lbs.

Hi I need to rettach the mower deck to a John Deere STX 38 mower how do I do that? Where does the deck spring attach to?

  • loughlin54 Jun 02, 2010

Is this link for a John Deere STX 38 mower? Because it does not have a place for the cotter pin. There's only one hook per end. I think it the back of the deck up.

  • loughlin54 Jun 02, 2010

I think it holds up the back end of the deck up.

  • Jayant Jha Jun 02, 2010

    Thats correct.

SOURCE: replace blades on a john deere L120 mower deck

First make sure you have the tools, metric that is. The deck must be removed and turned over. To do this you must put the deck in the lowest position. Using a 15mm socket pull the belt tension spring pulley forward to detach from clutch. Next remove retaining pins located at the five deck brackets. This will allow the arms to slide off and the deck can be dragged out from under the mower. Turn deck over. Use a 18 inch 2x4 to block blades while removing the two 15mm bolts. The bolt heads will need to be cleaned so the socket can seat on bolt head. I use my torque wrench to get more leverage and i can use it to reset blade bolts to 64 ft lbs. While blades are of it is a god time to thoroughly clean underside of deck.

SOURCE: I have a troy bilt riding mower blades will not engage in the 1 or 2 deck setting

There is a spring attached to a tensioner that probably came unhooked while changing the belt. Higher deck settings push the deck backwards enough to spin the blades, the lower setting need the spring tensioner to take up the slack in the belt.

How to replace mower belt for ZTR cub cadet mower

Changing the Blade Drive Belts:
a.Set the parking brake. Remove ignition key and both spark plug caps.
b.Unscrew the wing nuts from the deck covers and remove both covers.
c.Using a 3/8" socket breaker bar or socket ratchet insert the drive end into the 3/8" square opening in the lower idler arm assembly and push the idler arm counterclockwise. While holding the idler arm back, loosen the blade drive belt from the pulley and slide the belt away from the pulley.
d.Remove tension of the PTO belt by moving the belt tensioning rod. Loosen the belt retaining bolt.
e.Pull the tensioner pulley away from the belt and remove the PTO belt then remove the blade drive belt.
f.Reverse the process to install the belt.

How to change engine deck belt on a 2006 Dixie chopper mower

there isn't such a thing... it's either a hydro (motion) belt or the deck drive belt. Dixie's also sometimes had 2 belts for the deck... the drive belt and the blade belt. your model number should be under the seat

Changing Blades

With most small lawn tractors I've dealt with, you want to unhook the deck-blade drive belt, some have one large belt that turns the blades as well as the rear wheels, others have more than one belt.. usually you will find four brackets that suspend the entire mower deck below the lawn tractor. To locate these brackets raise the mower deck so that its not resting on the ground, then push the mower deck side to side and notice where the attaching arms are moving under mower but above the deck, once you find the four brackets, lower the deck 2 its lowest point. remove the connecting pins noting the exact hole each pin came out of, if you have not removed the belt bye now do so at this time. you may find a stubborn piece of metal preventing the belt from coming off near the larger pulley Don't bend it out of the way just remove or loosen its nut,its there 4 a reason. so now, 1 the belts off the pulley. 2. the pins or bolts have been removed from the suspending arms and the hole positions have been noted. remove any other actuating rods or levers remaining so that the mower deck can slide out from under the mower. you may have to put the front wheels on a 4x4 blocks or similar to accomplish this. once you've got the deck out carefully turn it upside down, use blocks to keep from mashing pulleys, etc. you will probably see two or three blades, remove hex head bolt w/ washer holding blade to spindle, be sure to note cutting side of blade and direction of travel. If you don't see bolts in the center of blade look for my other solution for changing blades and blade bearings.

The left blade on my John Deere LT155 stopped working

Besides the drive belt, there is a timing belt inside the mowing deck. The left blade is run by the timing belt. I imagine the timing belt is broken.

I need a belt diagram for a ranch king king plus also i need to know the size for the main drive belt

Ranch King is a brand name of the manufacturer MTD.

Product manuals with part blow-up diagrams are available from MTD's web site,
http://www.mtdproducts.com/
Models are identified from the model number printed on a label under the mower seat.
The PTO and deck drive belts are shown on one diagram and the transmission drive belt is shown on another. The Form number on my printed Operator's Manual is 770-10526A (22HP, 46in cut) for Hydrostatic 817/818 models.

Parts can be ordered directly from MTD or other distributors on the web.

It is my experience that original brand name MTD belts work best.

The 22HP, 46" mower deck Ranch King Pro has 3 belts:

The drive belt which runs from the engine pulley back to the hydro drive unit to provide over-the-ground propulsion is part #754-0349.

A mower has either an electric PTO or a manual PTO, not both.

The electric PTO belt the provides power to the blade deck (runs around the electric clutch on the engine shaft (activated by electric switch, not the mechanical hand lever that engages the mower deck) is p/n 754-0476 for the 46" deck.

The manual PTO belt the provides power to the blade deck (runs off the pulley on the engine shaft (activated the mechanical hand lever to the left of the steering wheel that engages the mower deck) is p/n 754-0228 for the 46" deck.

The deck belt that goes around the 3 blade spindle assemblies on the mower deck, to drive the grass cutting blades is p/n 754-0349

In my experience, the PTO belt lasts about half a season, the other belts break about every other season when mowing 4 acres weekly.
