Question about Samsung HL-P6163W 61" TV

2 Answers

There was a pop and the tv loss its color. I turned the tv off. The three indicators on the face of the tv begin to blink indicating the lamp needed to be replaced. I replaced the lamp. Still no picture. Now there is a hum (fluttering sound) coming from the rear of the tv. No picture.

It has been suggested that the access switch for the rear panel be reset. Also, replacing the color wheel and finally the DMD board. I am soliciting more detailed instruction for identifying these components and the specific sequence in which they should be replaced, starting with the least expensive. Also, a suggestion as to where to find replacement parts.

The hum comes from the power source, it goes in and out of protected mode, something is wrong there. My opinion is that some electrolytic capacitor from the power source have failed big time - they exploded - this, in turn has caused a failure in some low tension exits, including the one that controls the color wheel (that's why you lost the color), and fried the lamp.
This is a major failure, better to call a professional, and it will be expensive.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. To start with check the lamp if that’s working fine, you can also take the lamp cover off from the back then take the lamp out and try to reset the lamp door switch and then put the lamp back in. After this if still the issue is not resolved then check the ballast which is the power source for the lamp and if you also hear a loud whine like sound then it means that the color wheel has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If the lamp seems to be working fine then it’s the DMD Board that needs to be replaced.
Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

As I said earlier if you hear a loud whine like sound then it is the color wheel that should be replaced. To start with you'll have to take the lamp cover off from the back then take the lamp out and try to reset the lamp door switch and then put the lamp back in. If the lamp is not working then it is the ballast that should be replaced, if it is then it is the DMD Board. Dont think it can be more detail then this, you can buy the parts from this link. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

3 blinks indicates lamp door is not on or has not been reinstalled properly. This also could mean the lamp door switch has failed itself. Try removing the lamp door and putting back on, if that doesnt correct the problem then I recommend having the switch replaced.

Sony Bravia KDL-42V4100 42 in. LCD TV made a popping noise and then shut off and will nor turn on and red LED blinks 2 times..

Hi,
The Standby/Power light of the TV blinks when there is any internal malfunction in the TV. The self-diagnostic function of the TV will cause the STANDBY light to blink or flash when the television detects an issue. The number of times the STANDBY light flashes corresponds to a specific issue.
Few examples are given below; some of the issues may be resolved without the need for service.
1 blink / 2 blinks / 5 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a power-related problem with your set.
3 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a power-related problem with your set. The set will need to be serviced to allow a technician to determine the specific issue that needs to be repaired. If the power light flashes three times in sequence in a Lamp TV, the lamp cover is not securely attached. Reattach the lamp cover to resolve this issue.
4 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a back light or lamp power problem.
6 blinks: - This indicates that there is some kind of audio problem with your set.
7 blinks: - This indicates that there is a temperature problem with your set. Please check to make sure that the air vents on the sides and back of the set are not blocked or clogged and there is adequate ventilation around the television. We recommend that you check and clean the vents periodically to make sure the set receives adequate air flow. If the problem continues, the set will need to be serviced.
8 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a video-related problem with your set. If the flash sequence is not listed above or the light continues to flash, follow the steps below to perform a power reset:
Try the following steps to check if the issue can be resolved.
Turn off the television.
Unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet.
Let the television remain without power for 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.

If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.
If the issue continues to occur, service may be required.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Samsung hln617w dlp tv won't turn on. Red temp

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

No picture on my samsung 61" dlp.

The color wheel if bad enough, will cause the lamp not to light. If the lamp is truly bad, you can't usually tell by just looking at it unless of course it is broken.

Still sounds like a lamp:

TV won’t turn on
• Press the TV button or ON/OFF button while remote is in TV mode and there’s a source of power to the outlet or outlet strip.
• Make sure the TV is plugged in.
• You might have tried to turn on the TV during the lamp cool-down. Wait a few moments and the picture will appear.
• Has the power light on the front of the TV been blinking for one minute? If so, the lamp may be dead. Refer to the Power indicator
is blinking or fl ashing
section below for more information.
• When you fi rst plug your TV into an outlet, the Power indicator on the front panel will light and blink for approximately 30 seconds
and then go off during the initialization of the TV. This happens only when power is reapplied to the TV. The TV can only be turned
on after the Power indicator goes off.
• Check the wall receptacle (or extension cord) to make sure it is “live” by plugging in something else, such as a lamp.
• Something might be wrong with your remote control. Press the POWER button on the front of the TV. If the TV turns on, check the
remote control solutions on page 84.
Remote Setup might be set to the wrong option. Press MENU/OK on the front panel. Select Connections, then Special Features, then
Remote Setup. Choose TV (default).
Power indicator is blinking or fl ashing
If the light blinks 5 times, pauses, and blinks again 5 times, the lamp is trying to turn on. If the TV doesn’t turn on after 5 minutes and
then the light blinks steadily for one minute, one of the following options is possible:
• Lamp door may be open.Face the back of the TV. Locate the door at the bottom of the TV and close it. Turn off the TV and turn
back on. The lamp should turn on.

You can easily replace the lamp yourself by following the lamp replacement instructions. If your TV is still covered by
the warranty, call 1-866-723-6486 to receive troubleshooting assistance and a lamp replacement.
• If your TV’s warranty has expired, call 1-800-338-0376 to purchase a lamp replacement.

To order the correct lamp, you’ll need to know your TV’s model number, serial number, and lamp type—this
information is listed on the Service Model Number sticker (example of the sticker is shown above). Face the back of
the TV. The sticker is located on the right side of the TV.

Hope this helps :)

Turning off

Three blinking lights indicates a lamp problem.  This can be from A) a bad lamp, B) bad ballast C) bad Light Engine/DMD Board.  Try replacing the bulb first.  As with any lamps, it has a limited life.  If that doesn't work, you can try the ballast next.  If that doesn't work, it's time to take it in to a certified repair center for diagnostics.  Here is a page from the service manual on the three blinking lights.

Mine did that when the color wheel didn't spin up...just give it a whack where you installed the light & the wheel should spin up. I had to replace my color wheel as the bearing was shot & was buzzing all the time. The light won't come on if the wheel doesn't spin up first.
