Hi,

This is because you are loading sheets incorrectly or the the paper sticks and is out of specs. Please follow the correct procedure on page 42 of the user manual. Click here to open a pdf copy.

To remove this error do as follows:

  1. Pull the paper cassette tray completely out of the machine.
  2. Remover paper from the tray.
  3. Verify the paper width and length adjuster for the paper size you want are set accurately (squeeze and slide the adjusters to the correct width and length).
  4. Fan the paper well. Reload the paper in the paper cassette tray. The tray can hold up to 250 sheets of 20lb paper. Press down on the paper to flatten it in all four corners, keeping the paper level below the guide (located on the right side of the tray).

Please keep in mind that the sheets must not stick and the adjusters should be adequately set.

thank you, that got read of the check/load paper message. I had only set the tab for the correct size not the sliding bottom part of the tray. Now I'm getting a paper jam message but I can't see a paper jam anywhere.

Are you sure you did all the paper loading steps according to official instructions? You should not get a paper jam error if you did it right. Please note that you should check for any previous remnants which may have slid through and onto the toner or drum. This message is also displayed if somehow the machine is unable to pick paper from the tray.

I will paste the instructions word to word below, please go through them and I'm sure your machine will be up and running in a few minutes:

    "
Paper jams can result from a variety of
    causes. One
of the most common problems is the type of paper used in the machine.
    Please
verify that the paper being used meets the recommended paper
    specifications:

    Paper Tray

    • Paper type:Plain paper, recycled
      paper and transparencies

    • Paper size:A4, Letter, Legal, B5, Executive, A5, A6, B6

    • Weight: 16 - 28 lb

    • Maximum paper tray capacity: Approximately 250 sheets of 20
      lb plain
      paper

    Manual Feed Slot

    • Paper type:Plain paper, recycled
      paper and transparencies, envelopes

    • Paper size:Width: 2.75 - 8.66 inches

    • Height: 4.57 - 16.00 inches

    • Weight: 16 - 43 lb

    • Single Sheet Feed

If the paper meets these specifications
and PAPER JAM indications are still
    occurring, please follow these steps:

1.Turn off the Brother machine using
the On/Off switch located on the lower
    right side.

    2. Pull the paper tray, located in the
    bottom-front of the machine,
    completely out.

3.Remove any crinkled or damaged sheets
    and discard them.

4.Remove any paper remaining in the
    tray.

5.There are two blue paper guides
located on the either side of the paper
tray. These guides are used to adjust the tray to fit the width ofthe
    paper.
Squeeze the paper guide located on the right side of the trayto make any

necessary adjustments. Check that the guides are firmly in the slots
    located on
    the bottom of the tray.

6.The blue plastic paper guide located
in the center back of the tray isused
to adjust for the length of the paper. Squeeze the paper guide and
    adjust to fit
the length of the paper. Verify that the guide has locked into place.

    NOTE:
If using legal size paper you must
first extend the tray in the back, press the blue guide release button
    located
on the right rear sideof the tray and pull the back of the tray out.

7.Put the paper in the paper tray. The
side to be printed on must be face
down. The paper tray can up to 250 sheets (20 lb. paper)

    9. Reinstall the paper tray firmly back
    in the Brother machine.

10.Remove the tray once again to verify
that the rear guide has not slipped
when the tray was installed. If it has slipped set it back in place and
    repeat
the tray installation process. Check again to see if ithas slipped. If
    the rear
tab will not remain seated securely, please contact our Customer Service
    Center
at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding
    holidays.

    11.Reinstall the paper tray.

    12.Press the cover release button
located in the front of the machine below
the Output Tray Support Flap and extension and opens the front cover.

13.Remove the drum assembly by lifting
it slightly and pulling it out. If the
drum does not come out easily skip to STEP 20.

14.With the drum assembly removed pull
any jammed paper up and out of the
    Brother machine..

15.Remove the toner from the drum by
holding down the lock lever (blue tab)
on the right side of the drum assembly and lift the toner out.

    NOTE:
    Handle the toner cartridge
carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash
    it off
    with cold water.

16.Remove any small pieces of paper
    jammed inside the drum.

*This is an important step. Look very
carefully for any small piece of paper
thatmay be stuck in the drum.

17.Reinstall the toner into the drum.

18.Reinstall the drum assembly into the
    machine.

    19.Close the front cover, pressing
firmly on each side until the cover clicks
    into place.

20.Open the output tray located in the
    back of the machine.

    21.Pull out any jammed paper.

22.If you are unable to clear the jam,
open the Black Jam Clear Cover located
at the bottom of the fuser unit. There are two rectangular slotslocated
    on the
cover. To open it, place you finger in the larger slot located on the
    left side
and slide the cover to the left and press it down.

23.There are two blue pressure release
levers, one on each side of the fuser
unit. Pull these back and down to release the pressure roller inside the
    fuser
unit and allow the paper to slide out freely.

24.After removing the jam, push the Jam
Clear Cover back in position by
    lifting it up.

    25.Return the Pressure Release levers
    to their original positions.

    26.Close the back output tray.

    27.Power the machine back on.

    28.Test by making a copy. Place a
document face down in the ADF. Press the
COPY mode key located below the LCD display and press
    START. "

got it, thanks again. Not sure what was causing it, did most of the steps, it wasn't picking up paper, think the slide adjustments might have been it.

My printer won't print letter automatically. It's stuck on printing only legal. If I pull legal tray out it will print letter. But I need it to adjust with alternating print jobs.

Printer wont stop paper, if any page length mismatch,Select page length as any size, as well as while shooting the print command select page length as legal & try it. I feel that teflon not rotating properly, result paper jamming at bottom end. If any paper length faulty printer detects the length give message of mis match..Pl check carefully...

Printer wont print. It keeps saying PC Load Legal. The printer has paper in it.

Well the printer is telling you to load "Legal Size paper, which is 8.5" X 14" paper.

More than likely, the application you are using is telling the printer to print the page on legal sized paper.

If you want the document to print on "Letter sized paper (8.5" X 11") then in the application, go to the File drop down and select "Page Setup". From within page setup's window, change the paper size to letter and then re-print the job.

I HAVE LASERJET 4 PLUS. WHEN I GIVE JOB FOR PRINTING THE PRINTER DISPLAYS A MESSAGE AS PC LOAD LEGAL. PLS HELP ME IN SOLVING THE PROBLEM

The document you're trying to print is formatted for legal size paper, and the tray contains only letter size. if it's a legal size, put legal paper into the MP tray, or override the setting and manually select "letter size" in the printer dialog box.

Cannot print to legal size paper format

There could be a few issues causing this problem.
1. Your document size on the actual document you are attempting to print believes it is letter (which is the default).
To change this setting, you must tell the computer you wish to print on legal paper.

To do this in MS. OUTLOOK:
Put the curser at the top of the page
then...under 'File-Print-Preferences-Layout-Advanced-Paper size-change to legal (from Letter'
-slightly tedious...but follow along and this should help

2. The printer needs to be adjusted to hold the legal paper.
Open up the legal tray to adjust the paper holder to hold the paper snuggly...it slides roughly.

Hope this helps..if you need more assistance please ask...also please rate my solution.
PLEASE note that anything other than a FIX-YA is actually a negative rank...and will lower my success...I didn't make the system...but that is the way it is in FIX-YA.
thanks

Tray output

You should configure TRAY 1 as Legal only.
and Tray 2 as plain letter.

Specially when you specify from what tray/paper type to print.

This can be easily configured from the Printer Properties within the Printers and Faxes section of the Control Panel.

Good luck!
