I bought-the oster microwave and like others it did not last long before it stop heating. I took (careful precaution!!) and (unplugged the the unit!!) to view the fuse which of course is the main problem why this microwave does not heat up. Everything else works well but the heating. But since I changed the fuse to something very close to the same amp of the actual fuse it did work fine next to nothing.

I did not find any problem other than the noheating. This should only be attempted by someone who is in fact has close knowledge of electricity. The process is safe (WITH THE CORRECT PRECAUTION!!).Ever since I replaced the fuse and found out that that was all it needed I have been using it for 8 mths. Note--I did take measures into my own hands which is not recommended by anyone. But it is the old-fashion way...

My Rusell Hobbs 20L microwave wont heat food, what could be the problem?

If the control circuit turns on the power supply to the magnetron tube, the big power transformer should hum. Then after a couple seconds, it should hum louder as the magnetron warms up and starts to put out RF. If everything stays stone cold, the magnetron is probably shot.

These are repairable, and the parts are available. But you have to decide whether it is worth repairing. If it's past warranty, probably not. I am a radar transmitter engineer with 40 years' experience with these kinds of tubes, and if my ten year old microwave quits, I'm going to just throw it out (after I take it apart just to see what quit).

Our new microwave heats the containers but not the food. Container is too hot to touch. Food "looks" hot, usually boiling - but food isn't even warm.

Check on the material the containers are made of. If they are not microwave friendly then they will cause problems.
Some materials are designed to "Roast" the contents by absorbing the energy.
Check with a Pyrex glass container and water. The glass should stay fairly cool.

I tried to reheat food and didn't get any results. Could I have ruined it by turning it on without food?

well if you keep on running your microwave without any thing in it then yes! it burns out the magnatron
(thats the bit the heat come from) and when there burned out its a dust bin jod as there very pricy to by and its not a smart thing to do trying to fit a new one by yourself,, you stand a very good chance of just killing yourself first,,to test your microwave opn the door put inside a cup of cold water and turn on the microwave for 3 mins on full power, the water should be boiling by then,,,dont put anything in the hot water like milk or it could explode in your face! just tip it away

I have a space saver micowave. When I start it, it sounds like somthing is getting zapped. It also does not heat. It started with microwave popcorn and does it all the time and we cannot use it. Can you...

Hi Bob,
Chances are have either a bad magnetron tube or the filament transformer that is failing and arcing. The replacement cost of the parts & then labor to diagnose and install is probably more than it's worth so I would suggest you just consider buying another one. Also, Microwave Ovens radiate RF and unless you are trained in how to test for that and verify the shielding hasn't been compromised during repair, I wouldn't try to fix it myself. As an added concern, there is also High Voltage in there as well.. Your call.. but I would probably discard it and consider another one.. Hope that helps..

Oh.. for a quick test, remove everything from inside the cooking compartment and place a cup of water in there.. turn the microwave on for ~ 2 minutes..does the water get hot? boil or stay cold? If it stays cold.. discard it.. If it gets warm, the magnetron is probably in the midst of failing but if it gets hot .. then you may only have a loose connection in the electronics compartment ( magnetron, transformer etc) Something to hope for.. :-)

Lights up BUT does not cook

was there any motor that should run as you turn it on, the fan inside and the rotating table motor. try to replace that micro switch at the door that bubbled out and burnt. try to test or replaced right away the industrial diode that is connected from the capacitor to the ground of the microwave.
